Thought I would throw out a quick review of the shooting tripod I used this year for front country day hunts. Started looking for something for my daughter to use on her antelope hunt. Wanted something stiff & relatively lightweight that would accommodate sitting & kneeling shots. Also not being sure it was something I would use long term I did not want o spend a lot of money on the set-up.
After looking at options I settled on the Sunwayfoto T2830s. Purchased an open box option thru
Sunway Shooting Tripod
Youtube Review
I looked at this option vs Leofoto vs Aziak Ridgeline. I already had a Slik 632 with a Aziak ballhead for my backcountry hunts so opted for this set-up. Priorities included arca with quick release lever and tool less tension adjustment. I also wanted a integrated ball head with a single adjustable lever. The Sunway has a load capacity of 40lbs vs 14 pounds for the Ridgline. I was able try a Ridgline briefly and it did not handle the weight of a standard hunting rifle (8-9 lbs) nearly as well as the Sunway. This set-up is much better that shooting off my Slik with the Aziak ball head.
Overall I have been very happy with the set-up and plan to keep it in my kit for certain hunts. Day hunts where I will not be doing extended glassing sessions it will be coming along. Especially those in the sage where prone shots can be difficult. It offers excellent stability for seated shots out to 300-400yards.
Of course you can run it with three leg sections for standing height. You do start to get some flex with all three leg sections fully extended. If you wanted a dedicated standing tripod for shooting there are probably better options out there, although they will be heavier. For my uses I cannot see every really needing full standing height so a lighter/more compact sitting set-up is perfect.
After arrival I removed the lowest leg section and replaced them with some light weight furniture leg caps I ordered from Amazon. Total field weight is 2lb 4oz. Specs below with lower leg section removed.
Weight: 36 oz
Max Height: 39 in
Min Height: 8 in
Folded Length: 24in
Pros:
-Improved shooting stability & rigidity
-Quick set-up and adjustment with lever release arca
-Integrated ball-head with single lever control
-Single leg adjustment
Cons:
-Not ideal for glassing, works OK in a pinch but has no panning function --> Can clamp in my Tricer LP and have a full functional glassing system
-Weight - Trade off here: Fine for front country day hunts where the weight offers better stability & rigidity but too heavy for backcountry use. For backcountry hunts I still used my Slik 632 with the Aziak UL Ballhead (total weight 27 oz)
