Look into Lake Chelan and the town of Steheikin (sp?). Your trip to "town" will be a car without license plates and the only way to get there is boat, plane or a lengthy horseback ride.....but you'll never be anyplace that guarantees happiness quite the same.

What state is this?

I would consider flying into Spokane and renting a car. Spend the first couple of days in Sandpoint (my home town). The head north towards Banff. About half way there is an awesome little Bavarian style town whose name now escapes me. Then up into Banff. Amazing country, plus you’ll see bears, goats, sheep and elk.

Custer State Park is awesome. Deer, and bison roaming all around, beautiful country, decent fishing, good hikes that aren't really strenuous. Reasonable drive to town for amenities and not far from Rushmore.

Steamboat Springs would be nice as well. Better fishing in that area, some great hikes in the Routt NF and Zirkel wilderness, elevations over 11,000.

Or you could bounce into Cody, Wyoming. I have a friend that takes his wife there 2 or 3 times a year and they love it.

Lake Chelan is an awesome place, spent 10 years there in the 90's.

Another place that might fit your requirements is Flathead lake MT. Fly into Kalispell and stay on the lake and take a day and visit Glacier NP.

"Flying from pa. Looking to fly to a bigger airport to save money."

Major Airport with cheaper airfare will probably be Denver.

Or Salt Lake.

Agree on suggestions above... add Spokane to the list (east access to panhandle of ID). Another option/sleeper might be Phoenix then drive east to Pinetop/Show Low area (7k elevation). PDX would be cool, too, but you'd have to wade through some freaks before getting to Mt Hood area or the Gorge (but some great fishing in summer).

You might also check out Missoula. We had a big family vacation (16 of us) on Flathead Lake last August and one friend flew from Philly for a surprising price.
