Last Week I took 2 friends, and my parents (71 and 68) on a 5 day trip on the Southern End of the Wind river Range, ending at the Big Sandy Lodge. My parents brought their two riding horses, (Wings and TJ), and lead 2 pack horses (Pancho and Cinder). We were able to fit nearly all of our personal gear on the pack horses, along with 50# of Alfalfa Pellets and 30# of Sweet mix grain.
We traveled fo 2 days to get to the start. We overnighted in Wells NV. on the way. If you have never been in a car with two senior citizens trying to learn to use their Smartphones, you have missed out.

The Travel Itinerary involved 3 travel days, punctuated by a layover day between each travel day. My 68 year old mother was grateful for that.

I brought a Big Agnes Copper Spur UL4 anticipating sharing it, but my parents bought an REI Half Dome 4 which also performed well. (It appears to have been private labelled for REI by BA, and is a well made tent in its own right, just 2 pounds heavier).

Clothing
I wore my trail running shoes NB1210's with REI Trail Running Gaiters. Croc's for camp and Nighttime pee runs.
I had 2 technical running shirts I rotated, as well as a merino t shirt from KUIU. Socks were Merino blend. Mostly Ultimax from Wigwam.
Base bottoms were 2 pair of C9 compression shorts. I washed Tshirt, skivies and socks on the layover days.
Had a light softshell from one of my Vendors and a KUIU Chugach Raingear that only got used 1.5 nights.
Wore Cotton Cargo Shorts on the trail.
In the morning chill I wore a Woolrich shirt and Microtex pants.
Packed UA ColdGear Bottoms and First Lite Merino Longsleeve tops but never used them.
Cool Off Bandana

Ruger Service Six in .357 mag, in a Bianchi leather holster

Pack: Since We had Pack Horses I went light.
Badlands Reactor with 100 oz. Camelbak Reservoir
Carried Lunch, MSR Hyperflow filter, Softshell and rain jacket.

Other:
Black Diamond Hiking Poles:
Came in handy climbing steep sections of trail. I'll use them again..

Sawyer inline filter Filtered nearly all our water in camp for 5 people.

Thanks for the report. I must say, I hate travelling. Every chance I get I am backpacking in the Central Cascades of Washington. Most of the time, I don't drive more then 1-2 hours to the trailhead.

The Wind River Range has intrigued me for some time. Of all the trip reports I've seen. The winds always stick out to me. It probably has something to do with the fact I'm a lake bagger. :)

The report is much appreciated. One of these days I'll make it down there. Man I wish I knew more about horses. Sometimes they look really tempting. Other times, they look like a pain in the arse.

Very Cool. Beautiful country. Thanks for the picture tour.

Mark, I'm sure if you did a high country pack trip you'd enjoy it. You haven't lived until you've thrown down on mule pads under a manny tarp on some remote ridge w/ elk bugling below.

What an awesome trip 2rocky, and great photos!! Glad to hear your parents are still getting out there...inspirational for sure, and special to spend time with them out there I imagine.... We have a trip planned with both sets of our parents at the end of August to camp and hunt caribou this year, I am sure looking forward to it!
