Summer Break Hunt

Sitting here killing time on summer break (I'm a 7th grade history teacher) thinking about where I'd like to hunt next year now that I have a full time job. I live in Western PA, I'm fresh out of college, got a job 20 minutes from home making a starting salary of $41,200. I've been backpacking in Montana a few times but would like to start hunting that way too. I do have 3 personal days during the school year (I can carry over for a total of 5 next year) but I would rather just find a hunt that I could go on during summer break.

So that leaves me with Montana spring bear (or another state), maybe early season antelope somewhere, and MAYBE an unlimited sheep hunt in Montana. I know they're basically impossible odds for me to get a sheep like that but it would be a fun trip anyway.

Any other suggestions for good hunts where the season would coincide with my summer break? BTW my summer break is usually from right around the 1st of June till the 25-30 of August depending on the year. Oh and I guess Christmas break too, I know there's a deer season in AZ right around then I could possibly swing.

Or should I just keep backpacking since shooting an animal isn't a deal breaker for me? I do plan on using the personal days to head out for a fall mule deer or elk trip some day though.

DIY not guided.

A little closer to home and not a western hunt but both KY and TN offer mid august hunts for whitetails in velvet. I'm trying to talk the wife in to visiting some friends next summer.

Hello:

New to this site and a fellow educator. When I started out in education I really loved the summer off but as an avid hunter I could not take any time off during the traditional fall seasons. So I had to focus on hunting locally on the weekends( here in Massachusetts there is no Sunday hunting except for game bird preserves) and the holidays.

Summer hunt ideas:

I would go on a varmint safari. I'd load up the pick up truck with my camping gear and a gun case. I am an avid handgun hunter so I'd take a large bore revolver for protection against two legged and four legged varmints if you know what I mean. I would also include my TC Contender. Usually a 22 centerfire like a 223 or 22 Hornet. In the case was a 14 inch 22 WRM barrel. Tons of fun.

I'd go to the grasslands of North Dakota and Montana. Shoot prairie dogs and woodchucks ..um... I mean rock chucks ( west of that big river) and had tons of fun. You can get in a lot of shooting at live game and see some spectacular scenery. Also there is a ton of public land and if you meet the right people private land to shoot until you need to do an ammo run.

Some western states offer big game in the summer months. In 1993 I shot a nice pronghorn antelope with my 30-06 pistol in New Mexico during the 3 day private land hunt. I went with a guide and it was my first guided western hunt. I cherish the memory and learned as much as I could when in the field.

I have been to Texas but without success. A fellow educator and friend lived in the San Antonio area. I'd visit until he and his family got sick of me and I did go on some day hunts. The San Antonio Express used to have classified ads for day hunts. You could do a summer feral hog hunt for a trespass fee of 100 bucks or so. I never got one. I'd go with a bonafide guide for that.

Now I work in a year round program so I can take a vacation when I want to but I kind of miss the ole summers off.

One intriguing idea is the state of California. I believe Mendocino county has a July deer season and you can use a gun if you want. I have found it takes me about six days of hard driving to reach that area. Of course I am like old Bob Madden who drove everywhere.

Don't forget Az also has Javelina, so you could do a combo Coues (Cows) deer hunt. Ca also has year round hog hunting, but we are not overrun like Texas is. But I harvest more than my fair share of feral pigs. I have thought about that unlimited Sheep hunt, as I have a very similar schedule also being in the education field.

There is a handgun only section for Antelope in WY starting on August 10. Might apply for that next year. Haven't ever hunted with my handguns but I have multiple that will do the job, if I can do mine.

WY has antelope during August.
Hogs are legal most places year round.
SC deer opens in August.

You still have Thanksgiving, Christmas break, and maybe Winter break if you can figure that out.

I'm not big on just shooting stuff to shoot stuff. If you don;t absolutely have to shoot stuff, go enjoy the hiking, maybe fish some of the high altitude lakes for trout.

Depending on what WMU you hunt a bow and cheap flintlock can keep you hunting in PA from late September to late January. Ohio runs to February.

Just to clarify, I'm only really interested in hunting in the western states. I've been wanting to anyway, so if I could work it out with summer break or another break that would be great.

I actually have thought about that. Figured it would be a very cheap hunt and I'd get some good food out of it. Are there enough hogs on public land for DIY?
There can be on some but tough hunting. If I were you I'd book a night vision/thermal hunt right after we cut corn down here, mid-late July. There's a WMA close to home that is open early spring that can be really good if you're willing to walk through some marsh.
