Suggestion for a long range hunting shooting class

Hi everyone, after a few years I’ve finally decided to take a long-range shooting course oriented toward hunting applications, and I thought I’d travel to the USA specifically for this reason. It will also be a great opportunity to see your beautiful country once again.

I’ve looked into several group course options (such as Gunwerks, Gunsite, and the very interesting Shoot2Hunt class suggested by a forum member). I’m looking for an experience focused on hunting use, which, as we all know has nuances that are very different from tactical shooting or generic range shooting. After giving it some thought, I think I would prefer one-on-one coaching, although a specialized and well-structured course could still suit my needs. I believe that in a group course most of the theoretical lessons would be unnecessary for me, since I have a very solid theoretical background. On the practical side, however, since I live in Italy and we have a hunting culture that is very different from the American one, I’ve never taken any kind of formal course.

At the moment my skills are good, and I have excellent experience as a hunter at short and medium distances, but the technical aspect of shooting can certainly be refined—both in terms of fundamentals and in long-range shooting practice from various field positions, wind reading, recoil management, etc.

If money were not an issue, who would you turn to?

If money wasn’t an issue, I would attend all the courses that seemed interesting to me.

Since money is limited, I’m going to S2H in June. I’ll let you know if I think I got my money’s worth after attending.

Just something to check on the courses and I’m sure most of the major outfits are willing to take the steps. But from what I have seen, there are additional permit/clearance requirements for non US citizens to receive firearms training.

Shoot 2 hunt comes highly recommended on here, especially for hunt type scenarios. Gunwerks and barbourcreek also seem to have pretty good feedback. There’s also a place called Rob Furlong’s marksmanship academy that offers a lot of options up in Canada.

Lots of good threads here speaking highly of the shoot2hunt class with @Ryan Avery and @Formidilosus
Yeah i watched a 40 min YouTube review and sounds amazing. This will probably my end choice but i just want to know more about other options since it will probably something i will do a few times in my life and i have to take an airplane and flight on the other side of the world XD

A 1v1 coaching would be amazing but I am not sure if it is a thing (maybe it would be difficult to find a facility to do so or to rent rifle and ammo)

Yeah, i would as well, unfortunately i live on the other side of the atlantic so i have to pick only one class for now.. i have a great responsability job and i can’t just fly overseas multiple times a year to take shooting classes, even if I would love to

So maybe we will meet there, who knows!

I don’t think there are so many regulations about this because when i was in Vegas last time i shot a couple Hours every kind of machine gun in a range in the desert and no one asked me any specific permit other than some papers i had to sign in place. Even my ex girlfriend, with almost zero experience with firearms, was emptying 200 rds belts with a m249 XD

It’s not so much the shooting part like you would do in Vegas, it’s the training part that is regulated through ITAR.
Here’s a statement from Barbourcreek in regards to it. Gunwerks is similar, but if you contact them they both will submit the appropriate paperwork for approval.

“Due to current interpretations of (ITAR) International Traffic in Arms Regulations stemming from the Arms Export Control Act of 1976, only current, lawful “US Persons” – both US Citizens and lawful permanent Resident Aliens in possession of a current I-551 (colloquially known as a “Green Card”) are allowed to participate in NRA type firearms training courses.Bottom line – just as the ATF form 4473 states the legal requirements to buy a gun – those same requirements apply to gun training.”
