i have permission to hunt a ranch in New Mexico. NM is super cool with private land owner deer tags. i just buy one OTC and go. we each have to have a copy of the permission letter.
i invite my LA friend and pick him up on the way. we know quail season opens during the hunt so we come loaded for EVERYTHING. i even bring my .22 PCP pellet rifle to get first blood on rabbits and (legal) Eurasian doves.
we get a deer opening day and you know that good feeling where the pressure is off. it is a good feeling. then we get a second buck down. big day hikes and copious glassing cured the problem from lack of intel.
quail season opens..and the skies unload birds on us. it might be my best quail shoot ever. it was one of those days you lose count and just have to stop for fear of going over the limit. in between quail blasting, we would look up and blast overhead eurasion doves. i didnt because i wanted to use my pellet rifle, which was way harder than i imagined.
i never did get my deer, but i didnt care. two deer worth of meat is a lot and the birds and bunnies where everywhere. my pellet rifle was pretty awesome at killing cottontail.
if we didnt get the two deer early, i think we would have been skunked. hiking for deer, birds were exploding everywhere. what a distraction.
my first box of shells i hit 5 birds. my second box..i shot 11 shells and got 8 birds. i got used to my new hand-me-down Browning Citori pretty quickly. next year, i'm bringing more shells and a refill bottle for my pellet gun. hand pumping SUCKED.
