Stripped Screws on EGW Rail?

I installed an EGW long action rail on my Remington 700 and stripped 2 of the base screws with only 20 in pounds of torque. I'm wondering if maybe my torque wrench is off. It not, these screws were awfully fragile. The screws use a T10 bit which seems pretty skimpy. Any suggestions on the best way to get the stripped screws out or should I just consider bringing it to a gunsmith? Is there another screw I should be looking at as well for this?

If it were me I would take it to a gun smith and have him back the screws out. He will be able to do it with precision and wont booger up your action. Then I would have him install the rail with better screws.

Have a gunsmith remove the screws and then try again with a better rail. EGW has issues with insufficient material under the screw heads. It also sounds like the screws you used were not steel. I've tightened down a lot of Torx head screws and find that the driver bits consistently twist/warp before the screw head is damaged, but even that only happens at higher torques.

I had a similar problem swapping out rings on a Savage 110 last weekend. The Irwin EX-1 screw extractor was the ticket (the ones I had were too big).

Not sure if this would solve the problem but thought I'd share...

Did you drill the extractor into the top of the screw or tap it with a hammer? Once the extractor is engaged did you then use a drill to back it out??

You drill a hole first with high speed bit and oil, then tap the extractor into the hole with a hammer. Then turn the extractor with a wrench - the reverse threads grab it and back it out. Pretty easy.

Not being a dick but if you have to ask how to use an easy out just take the gun to the Smith. It will probably save you a headache

You'll never learn if you don't ask and then try. Folks come on here for advice - suggesting he's not competent enough to work an extractor vs. cares about his rifle enough to ask the best way to do it are two different things.

Save your money and get the extractor.

I can’t be of any help with your current problem but I almost stripped a few while taking a rail off a savage 116. I don’t think I’d reuse them. They were properly torqued when I installed them. If I remember correctly, the heads seemed shallow with rough edges on the torxs head. The proper size torx bit didn’t seem to fit properly. On a side note, I have a mounted never used rail for sale, discounted for some rough screws!

That is a very kind offer and thank you!! The good news is only the bit was stripped, not the screws so I was able to get them out with a new bit. The root of the issue appears to be a torque wrench that is reading low values. Thanks for all the responses!!
