String frayed in New PSE Stinger Max?

New archer here. First proper bow. It's about a month old and I've probably shot 150ish arrows with it. I noticed today my string is looking kinda frayed. I haven't yet waxed my string. I'm not sure if it came waxed or not. Does this look dangerous? Do I need to get a new string already?

Yeah I would not shoot that. That's the problem with budget bows that don't have roller guards. If there is any imperfections in that plastic cable guard it can rub and fray. Your gonna have to take that back in to the shop and see if they will replace the string. I would really consider getting something with an aluminum riser and roller guards on your next rig.

I inspected my slider and there is a clear channel worn in the plastic already. This doesn't seem right for only 150 shots does it?

No, it's defective. Definitely take it back to the shop and do not shoot it. You probably purchased it at big box store. You'll need to go there for warranty work, but after that you need to find a reputable shop.

That cable and slide are toast. they need to be replaced. My thought is that there is something else going on there too and a reputable shop will be able to tell you immediately. Possible cables crossing wrong etc

PSE emailed me back and only said it appears there isnt enough wax on my string. I guess it's my fault then.

That has nothing to do with wax, I haven't waxed a string in over 2 years, you got crap customer service. Take it to a real shop, order another cable guard and a new high quality string.

PSE customer service has been super helpful when I called them. That sounds like a poor response to blame you for not waxing the string. Imo there is no way waxing a string would prevent your defective cable guard from doing that. I think they should give you a new cable guard off warranty. I'm sure your local PSE dealer would do a swap off one of the bows the have in stock. I wouldn't shoot that cable guard with any set of strings

They said the string came waxed from the factory but it needs to be waxed before and after every time it's shot. I'm surprised that if it came waxed in 150 arrows it started doing that damage.

This is the down side of living in a small town. No good shops within a 4hr drive. I guess I'll have to suck it up and order a new string and cable guide and then try and get the local shop to set it up for me. This might be the end of my first hunting season to be honest. By the time this bow is ready hunting season is going to be open and I'll have barely shot it. It's not even sighted in right yet.

I'm really sorry man, where did you get it? Maybe the store will work with you if they are cool. My dad has a PSE Stinger and it took over 4 months for them to send him a stupid string stop.

I tried to buy my bow at the local shop in April. They said they couldn't get any bows ordered before September and they didn't have anything in stock for me. So I got this on online from Bass Pro shops and the local shop set it up. I just got back from the local shop actually. His opinion was this cable slider is jacked. Said not to shoot it with that slider. Get a Saunders style and wax the hell out of the string. Should last the next month till season is over. Then we'll get a new string on it. So that's the plan and hopefully it doesn't explode on me.

I would bite the bullet and buy new cables. You don’t have to buy a full set, just get new cables.

Then throw on a better slide and see if that fixes the fraying issue.

This is also a good time to see if the PSE roller guide is an option. I don’t like anything without rollers for this exact reason. There is no reason to have your strings look like that, even with a slide.

Honestly man they gave you a BS response. I haven't waxed my strings in well over 500 shots over months. I would call back and try and get someone else on the phone. Sorry your having a rough time bud.

Well now looks like they will warranty it, but they want me to send the whole friggin bow in. That would be the end of the season. This is their latest response. Not real impressed with PSE at the moment.

"They do come waxed, but friction causes heat and melts it away. Wax needs to be reapplied as needed to keep the string and slide from wearing. Usually a light coating is applied Before and After your finish your shooting session.

Wax can start deteriorating at approximately 20 shots depending on conditions.

Please provide your serial number so we can issue you a return authorization number. We will be happy to inspect the bow and replace the strings and slide for you."

well at least that is forward progress and they have agreed to do something. The waxing maybe its important with cable slides, I'm not 100% sure all my bows have rollers. Honestly you may miss this year. This why a bunch of us have at least 1 backup. Just like having a couple guns. At the end of the day you may miss 20' but you will have plenty of time to dial in for 21'. I have been messing with my bow and arrow setup for 4 months already. I know its not exactly what you want to hear but you kinda started late and a little behind the gun only starting a month ago.

Agreed, plan was to start last fall. But wife ended up having surgery and that took up my fall/winter. Then planned to get going this spring, and covid hit. Wasn't how I had wanted to get into this, but it is what it is.

I have one, in 3 sets of strings, that has never happened. Either the slide had some burrs, that likely rubbed away with shooting, or you caught the strings on something. The factory strings suck, at best. Buy a new slide and threads and get shooting. Buckslayer, Archeryshack, Catfish, all quality threads. Hop to it, with hunting seasons approaching, guys get busy and backed up.

Do you wax your string every 20 shots? PSE is saying the wax starts to deteriorate every 20 shots. I got the bow about 3 weeks ago and 150 arrows through it without wax. So I guess its my fault.

Not even close. Every 20 shots is ridiculous. These have been waxed once or twice in over 300 firings. Like I said, get a new slide and threads and you'll be fine.
