Planning for my first elk hunt. Does anyone have recommendations for a stove for a backcountry hunt?

A lightweight stove for packing in, what shelter are you heating? A couple lightweight stoves are Kifaru Smith stove and Lite Outdoors TI.

I use the Kifaru Smith stove and have thoroughly enjoyed it in my SO LBO. Next year getting the lite outdoors for the bigger shelters. Check out lead times though, because both companies make it when you order.

Do you mean a cooking stove.
I’ve had an inexpensive olicamp stove for maybe 4 or 5 years now. I haven’t used it extensively, but I really like it. If you are just rehydrating meals, it boils water fairly quickly. I’m sure a jetboil would be somewhat quicker. Lighter options are also available. I am also on a bushcraft forum and a lot of guys there like small wood burning stoves. They are cool and save you the space of a gas canister but may not be legal everywhere and have to deal with building up the fire etc.

I’m sure any lightweight backpacking stove by msr or any of the other brands would serve you well

Sorry I guess I should have said for cooking. Something like a jetboil, but I see multiple brands and prices. Is Jetboil the best??

Yes a cooking stove. Do you know how long a gas canister lasts? If you are just using it to rehydrate meals? Thanks for the feedback!

MSR WhisperLite international stove, it burns white gas, kerosene or unleaded gasoline in a pinch.
I have had one for about 18 years and it has served me well on many backpacking trips. It boils water quickly and is easy to clean. It is light, small and fits inside the pot I boil water in.

Another note of importance:
Jetboil is instant "on" once you light it. The WhisperLite has a bit of a ritual to start it up, you should hit youtube and check it out. It is 20 year old tech, foolproof, but time consuming.

Thanks! The Jetboil will probably be a better option for me.

I’ve ran a msr pocket rocket for 2 years and have zero complaints. Has yet to fail me. A canister, pocket rocket, and lighter fit inside my pot and lid and pack easily in my pack

I bought a cheap stove off amazon, I think 13$. It wasn’t a Primus but something similar. My buddies with jet boils will hear their water in 2 minutes while it takes me 2 1/2. I guess mine might use more fuel but in 7 days I didn’t use an entire bottle of fuel and it was the smallest canister. Not as fancy but for heating water I’ll spend 20$ over 120$ all day long.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but based on everyone's feedback, all of the stoves mentioned will boil water and that's all I need it for. The only difference is how long it takes to lite the burner and boil the water and how much $$$ I want to spend? Has anyone had a bad experience with a certain stove and would say got to buy a certain stove?

JWill, true they will all boil water, Weight and space needed for the stove is also considered by most.
I like the Jet Boils but I also have smaller lighter stoves that fit better in my pack for longer trips.
