STOP!!!!

You mean for classified transactions here? The issue is that from what I've read, PayPal does not play nice with anything firearms related. An easier scam is a buyer can pay the extra fee for G&S, then dispute the charge and when PayPal sees that it's a firearm related part they just nuke your account and refund the buyer.

Seems like a damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario...

Yes here in classifieds. You and a few others routinely bring up this argument, and frankly-if that works for you rock on. There are ways to work around what your describing, and still be protected.

For the large group of folks getting scammed, that's not working. Again, very simple. Friends and family is for FRIENDS AND FAMILY.

I feel bad for some guys, but some guys can only learn from the school of hard knocks. They might not get the item they were after, but they did get something. . . . a lesson they won’t soon forget.

They say a sucker is born every minute...

While I can agree with both of you, in this case a scammer is profiting from the "lesson", and encouraged to keep doing it. I'm not ok with that.

Don’t get me wrong. I wouldn’t shed a tear if they dropped a bomb on a call center full of scammers. As long as there are stupid people there will be people that prey on them. As a high school physics teacher of 25 years, I can tell you the percentage of stupid people in our country is not decreasing.

What are the ways to work around this? Genuinely curious. Mailing checks maybe?

I get the whole FNG red flags, but some of these scammers are playing the long game or hacking established accounts.

Back in the day on Archery Talk and other forums we used to have to send a money order from the post office. When the seller received the money order they would ship the product. I believe only the person on the money order could cash or deposit it with valid ID that matches the name on the check. I dont remember anyone getting scammed 20 years ago when that was the process.

But seriously though, none of these things have to do with a payment method. That's someone thinking, "I can get a pair of Swaro TAs for $1K? Who cares if its too good to be true, I'M IN!!!". You're blaming a symptom for the disease.

I'd bet mandating 2FA in order to access the classifieds would cut the scamming down by half. At least it would solve having hacked accounts in the classifieds.

Agreed.

But is there not a pathway to vet out members? Especially FNGs. Like uploading photo ID or anything along those lines? The fact that some Nigerian POS can just join and post Willy nilly from Pakistan is stupid.

Every single member purchasing in the classifies should demand FaceTime interviews before purchase.

Anything over an amount I would lose sleep over involves me not purchasing it from the classifieds.

Fixed to how I think of it.

Even dealing with someone who is well known, and has good intentions, stuff can happen, aside from an account being hacked.
Buying through classifieds has some risk, in my mind. Either be prepared for it, or don't purchase.

I haven't been ripped off, have had items not exactly as described, pick my battles.

I’ve only used F&F to dodge fees and taxes… but only on low dollar stuff and with guys that have been around for a while. Even had a guy pick up a lb of H1000 from my mailbox and left cash during COVID.

Curious how so many folks are getting scammed? Not doubting it at all.
