Any DIY mountain hunt for sheep you return home from safe is a success, but putting a ram down is icing on the cake.
My hunting partner and I hired Kevin Willis of Riverjet Adventures to take us up the Muskwa, then Tuhodi rivers into13-08 an area we could set out on a 10 day backpack sheep hunt. We are both BC residents, this hunt was unguided and we had never been to this area before
First day we put a stalk on a lone ram we spotted from 2-3km away on a high ridgeline, we had him at 20 yards but couldn't judge age and he busted us and walked away, we were blown away with such early success.
The next day we snuck to within 90 yrds of 3 rams but they pulled a fast one on us whle we snuck closer behind some rocks, however one of them, a 7 year old ram came in for a closer look at us, he busted us at 4 yards, we stood motionless with him for 3 minutes. It was one of the most incredible and intimate moments I have ever experienced with wildlife.
Day 3: 13-08-13 a day ill never forget
We climbed out our camp, straight up 1000ft to the ridgline, as we crested we were welcomed by a high mountain lighting storm. We sat on our toes in a bushel of blac spruce trees until the storm subsided enough for us to drop back to the valley bottom. We decided to spend the rest of the day, watching a band of rams and getting a pattern worked out on them, then we noticed a few larger rams bedded against the rocks at the top of a chute. 4pm, back up the mountain, we snuck in on the rams. We positioned ourselves 50 feet above the rams with less than 50 yards between us. I carefully picked apart the rams looking for a legal full curl, or an old broomed bugger for my partner to shoot. After 45mins I had confirmation for my partner, he was 30 feet higher than me up the peak positioned to shoot the biggest ram. When I told him to shoot he told me he didn't have a shot, only a small amount of neck showing, he told me if I had a shot to take him. I couldn't believe he was offering I take the ram, we had flipped for it, I asked if he was sure he says "shoot him"
I settled my crosshairs on the shoulder of the ram and touched one off. 300wsm 165grain TTSX at 40 odd yards, the ram never moved.

I should mention we found a pile of elk and moose sheds, only packed out one paddle, we hunted for a total of ten days but couldn't close the deal on a ram for my partner. He's a good man, and will have me next year as his guide/Sherpa. I also managed to take an old brute of a wolf on a sandbar by the river, he had one canine missing and another worn to a nub. We figured him at about 160lbsish.

That's a freaking sweet hunt! Well done and thanks for sharing. Honor that obligation to your partner you've got a good one there. The facial markings on that ram are special too.

Yeah, a lot of wolf sign up there, locals were happy to hear we nailed em. Elk had cleared the valley so we figured it may have been wolves pushin them out

Enjoyed your story, thanks for the read. Currently driving to the same area aiming for the same experience.
