Stone glacier top bag needed?

I have a 7900 and I am using it on a 7 day sheep hunt. I was curious if the top bag
Is needed? Seemed to have a good amount of space and the top bag weighs 9 oz. Curious if it is needed to help with attaching a head to the bag?

You are talking about the lid, correct? You can strap a head to the pack without it, but it makes it much easier if the lid is on.
