Now if I could just make up my mind between Solo and Sky5100 I could get the ball rolling!

After using a solo/approach combo during a 3 day backpacking trip recently the question of solo vs 5100 for me would boil down to the season I was planning on using it for. Late season, where more insulating layers, stouter sleep systems and calories are required I would definitely go with the 5100 (or greater). Early season, where I could get away with a lighter bag and shelter, the Solo would be more efficient for me. Considering that, the 5100 seems more versatile as it is can convert down to the solo ci @ a min weight cost. Also, I could see the full length front zipper, internal pockets and lid being nice features.

Either way, in the limited use I have had so far, both the Solo and Approach have been great. I opted for this combo bc I like having the approach as a day pack and not dealing with a bigger pack cinched down. I am also tinkering around with an Eberlestock scabbard between the frame and approach bag to see how that works in day pack mode. The modularity is great.

For what its worth, I also opted for the 3 piece belt (33" waist) and it worked out well for me with a 52 lb load and 32mi trip.

Thanks for all the input guys! Much appreciated.

Looks like the 3 piece belt with pulls for sure.

Now if I could just make up my mind between Solo and Sky5100 I could get the ball rolling! For this year I think I'm only doing 3-4 night trips (depending on draws) so I think I'll probably go with the Solo and can always get a Sky bag later.

I bought the Approach as the first bag on my frame. I quickly found out that I needed way more room, so I skipped the solo altogether and went right for the Terminus. These things compress down to nothing, so using a large bag as a daypack is not a big deal. You can always compress the bag down, but you can never increase volume. I would go with a bigger bag.

So I'm ordering Monday, gotta decide.

Can't find any pics, does the Solo have small zipper down the center? That's a smaller pocket at the top right?

Leaning towards the solo cause I only have a couple 2-4 night trips planned this year and then 9 days staying in a base camp in Wyoming, probably pick up the 5100 for some longer trips next year.

Does the Solo come with the new style load sling like the 5100?

Maybe I better give them a quick call....

Mtnboy,
The Solo does not have a center zip, the zipper is a 2/3 zip around the top and sides creating a panel load effect when open (kind of like a suitcase.) The center black strip in the photos is a webbing gear loop (for carabineers etc.) The top does have one exterior pocket, one separation pocket on the inside panel of the pack. All packs have the same load shelf set up, which is the detachable shelf that can be moved to the front of the pack for a compression panel (just like the 5100 you mentioned.) If there is anything I can help with, feel free to email me at [email protected].
Thanks,
Kurt

Thanks for the reply Kurt!

Just got done hitting the submit button on Schnee's!

I think I'm gonna have to do a Spring Bear/Early Elk Scouting trip in a few weeks to test drive this thing, I can't wait!
