Here’s a comparison of an untouched VG and one with about 1/4+” of steel epoxy and epoxy texture. I have decent sized mitts but these grips are stupid long. Modified, it feels about perfect.

Also added some texture to the forearm. These sticks seem to be a great value at $400 if you’re willing to put some work in. The overall shape feels excellent and the Tikka versions inletting looks really good. View attachment 812753View attachment 812754
Great stuff! What materials were you using?

for the grip molding I used Ace hardware brand steel epoxy plumbers putty. I just roughed up the grip with 120 grit and couldn’t believe how well it bonded. Then over that, I taped off areas for the grip and forearm, and mixed 2 part steel epoxy and wiped it on and then dabbed at it with a shim to make the “sharkskin” type of finish. When ir full cured I knocked the sharpness off with the 120 grit and then degreased and painted. This stock feels amazing now and I actually really enjoyed the process.

Did you happen to weigh it after performing those mods? Trying to decide between doing what you did with a stockysVG or waiting on a rail-less Rokstock for my .223
Ah man, I did not. I should have. I’ll that say that I’d be shocked if it added more than an ounce or two total.

Even if it was more, the mod is worth it to me after shooting one unmodified. The grip is just not great before the added material and texture.

I have half a mind to start doing this service for Rokslide members that don’t want to do it cause I’m having a blast with it and they’re coming out really nice.

Looks great! I've got one in the mail. If I don't like the grip, I may have to give this a try.
I would be surprised, if you’ve got anything less than size XXL dick beaters, if you don’t want to add to the grip. Shooting my unmodified one, next to my molded and textured one, was a night and day difference.

Stockys made a nice handle here but they whiffed the grip badly, which I know is not news to anybody. Thankfully they’re cheap enough that the TLC needed doesn’t sting too bad.

Other than the vertical grip on my factory Tikka stock, this will be my first VG rifle stock (for a sporter/hunting rifle, anyway). So, I don't have much to compare it to. I've seen lots of people do this and understand the trigger reach is a bit of a problem, at least for some folks. Also, I understand the stock is pretty slick, apparently hence your texture panels. I ordered one of the web colors instead of one of the carbon colors hoping the web would give it a bit of texture. I'm not sure how it is applied. If not, I'll probalby add texture panels as well.

Out of curiosity, why did you choose plumbers putty instead of Marine Tex, which I see several other folks recommend? Also, did you put something under the putty on the grip or just build putty on top of itself to add that much material? Thanks again!

Marine tex would probably work fine but I wanted the workability and “build” of the putty -: you can pretty easily gain like 1/4” in one round of putty application. It applies to itself really well if you need more after the first round. I scuff sanded the areas that needed molding/texture and the epoxy putty applied harder than I would have believed. That shit isn’t coming off. I them sanded it to smooth and comfortable then applied the 2 part epoxy over it for texture…

If there is a marine Tex epoxy putty I’m sure it would work great too, but the Ace plumbers stuff is what I’d seen several people use with good results so I just went that route.
