Stock fitting question

Stocky’s fit has the the bottom metal sitting .035” too low, bolt won’t pick up a round. I’ve compared it to factory stock and landed on the difference. That was easy.

Question is - where do I take the .035” from? Top side(action side) or bottom side (bottom metal side)? Is there a standard answer here?

This, unfortunately, has been observed in dozens of Stockys inletting. It’s not necessarily inherent to Stockys but that brand is common/popular on Rokslide, so instances of it being observed are what they are.

I always use the shim kits from High Desert Bottom Metal and let the magazine be my guide. Whether factory or aftermarket bottom metal, having to shim with aftermarket stocks is common.

Problem is I have to mill down not shim up.
 
Since the ejection port is fairly well in plane with the ejection opening, it would usually come off the bottom by deepening the recess the bottom metal sits in.

It’s a pain in the butt to carefully chisel, cut and scrape that amount off of epoxy filler and not have it look like a beaver chewed it off. Dremel tool looks even worse, but more people have them so I bet that’s the most common way to go about it. I tend to Dremel things away to the rough depth, then skim coat the rough surface with bedding compound and loosely tighten the bottom metal on. When action screws are fully tightened down it should clamp the bottom metal to the stock at the screws and not bind anything else in the middle or accuracy problems are likely.
