So I’ve always used a 32oz Nalgene with my pen, this year I switched to two 48oz Nalgenes. My mind says use the steripen 2x to be sure. Does 1L and 1/2L as you already know. Anyone using their pen with a larger Nalgene or is it not recommended because it can’t get enough light transmission? If it’s the latter not the former, I guess my fate is in Gods hands now cause I drank some stagnant water from a weep on the side of a mtn and looked like cattle may have used it early in the summer

I carry 1x 32oz and 1x 48oz for this reason, use the 32 for purifying and the 48 for my 'bladder' with a hardside hydration setup.

Id bet hitting a 48oz 2x will probably be fine but I personally wouldn't risk it, 80oz is still plenty for me and I have a 4L bag that I keep if I need to haul a bunch of dirty water up to camp and can steripen it 32oz at a time.

I carry a nalgene and treat that with steripen, I also carry 1 or 2l platypus bags all the time and treat those with aquamira when I fill them up.

I did just pick up the katadyn be free to try next week at duck camp and the week after we head to CO again, and all that will do is replace one of the 1l platypus bags, If i like it i'll get rid of the steripen and treat into a nalgene/1 or 2l bags accordingly.

I'm sorry I just realized I didn't answer your question, I just do whats recommended which is NOT a 48oz. I've had giardia once and I'll do everything in my power to not have it again. my .02 sorry again!

I ditched the steripen after getting sick from water several years back. We were up high and only had little seepy water to fill from and there were unavoidable floaters in there that I think prevented the pen from working well enough. If you are gonna use one have something as a prefer like a bandanna or something.
