Not a big fisherman as a whole. At least not one at a time with a rod.

But got a line on a fishing trip for 10 days in SE Alaska end of April. Dirt cheap maybe 500$ all up door to door.

What's steelhead fishing like anyways?? Not a fan to get pissed down all day to catch 3 fish.. and don't do fly fishing.

Thanks.

Stay home. Or better yet...go.. but be forewarned three steelhead is good day at times. Steelhead on fly rod are second only to Atlantic salmon.

I don’t think you’re going to like steelhead fishing. That said, if you’re talking about the Situk, it’s just like rainbow trout fishing on any little river, the only difference is, you have a chance to catch 30+ lb. rainbows.

Thanks for the quick reply guys

It's the tsiu if that makes a difference.

Is it normal ak rainbow fishing or headwaters of a Bristol bay river/lake fishing?

Caught my first steelhead in the Naha river NW of Ketchikan in 1988. Been obsessed ever since.
Not a productive fishery, 3 a day is doing good. I love the hunt. Great fight and just flat out fun!

I've fished the Situk river (SE AK) multiple times and each one was different even though roughly the same time of year. I've had no fish to 20+ in a day depending on the steelhead run and pools you find. If you have a chance at this price, absolutely do it. Beautiful country as well. Bring good gear .

There will be less people on the Tsiu, harder to get to. Leave the treble hooks at home, you’ll be catch and release. 9wt flyrod. April can be really nice weather wise but it’s a good bet you’ll see some wind and rain. There is not a prettier place in the world than Alaska’s gulf coast.

Yakutat is a special place for sure. Probably didn't fully appreciate having a 4 wheeler and a skiff at my disposal.

Ditto ditto ditto. Stealhead fishing is a lot like big game hunting otc public land. It’s a lot of time and effort for the sweet sound of that reel stripping line. Nothing like it!!!!

I didn’t even know the Tsiu had a steelhead run. The only thing I think of when I hear Tsiu is August and big silver runs.

I hear what you boys are chirpin. I'm out.

On a random side note, if a hunt in Alaska says it's registration hunt, say on August 1st and the hunt starts August 10th.. if there's no caps do I need to show up on the first or just show up to the office and do the registration the day I'm gonna fly out? Stupid question I know.

Most Registration hunts you’ll need to be there in line to register early early (0400) on the day registration opens IOT assure yourself of getting a tag. Not a good bet for most NRs.

I personally would rather steelhead fish in 26 degree weather with sideways snow and little to no hope of tailing one than most anything else except maybe an October day when you can catch them skating.

I appreciate your candor- and I’d say that the experience your about to have isn’t representative of steelhead fishing in general.

For as much as you appreciate a good adventure I’d say go for it. Steelheading isn’t for everyone. I was an addict. Swinging flies throughout the lower 48 and BC chasing those things nearly 12 months a year. Met some amazing folks, experienced some of the finest country and rivers known to man in pursuit of one of the most noble fish that swims.

They’re probably my favorite species to fish for with tarpon being a close second. A few pics going back some 30 years, give or take.

My largest to date was a 42”x28” buck. I was fishing alone, hence the crappy photo.

Tarpon... now you're singing my tune. My problem is that I'm well over a thousand miles from a tarpon, but I fish them every time I have a chance.
