Statins

They haven’t updated lipid guidelines since the publication of PREVENT. So, most recent guidelines still use pooled cohort ascvd calculator.

And where did I say a CAC of 0 can’t allow safe depreciation of statins in patients hoping to avoid (although the logic of this isn’t great in younger patients seeking long term prevention)?

You, of all people, should know better than to recommend statins based on a 1990s calculator that was developed before CAC imaging even existed without first checking CAC. It absolutely negates your stated indication for a simple ASCVD score of >7.5%. Even at 10%, the recemmendstion from the 2018 ACC/AHA Cholesterol Guideline (Section 7.4.2.1) specifically says:

“If the CAC score is zero, it is reasonable to withhold or delay statin therapy, except in cigarette smokers, those with diabetes mellitus, or those with a strong family history of premature ASCVD.”

He's a DR, who are you?

Wondering who on here takes a statin? And how it affects you? 10yrs ago my dad got on a statin. He was 53yrs old, 5'9" and 170lbs. He was at 260 on his cholesterol.

I went and got my bloodwork done for the first time in 8yrs. Last time mine was 185. This time it was 210. Dr. told me that its time I get on some cholesterol medication. She prescribed me advorstatin. Last night I got to looking it up on the internet. Some things really stood out to me on the side affects list. Memory loss and and type 2 diabetes. My dad isn't a sugar eater and never has been. 3yrs ago he started to not be able to see very good. Went to the eye Dr. and got told that he needed to go to his regular Dr. instead. So he did and has diabetes. So they put him on a medication for that. And me and my brother have noticed for the past 1yr-1.5yr that his memory is getting BAD. Bad enough that we are/were thinking maybe something more than just being a little forgetful.

Maybe they aren't related at all. But I am going to call in tomorrow and tell the Dr. my concerns and get her opinion before I start taking them. I know that I probably need to do something to get my cholesterol down. But making me a diabetic and not remembering much isn't very appealing either.
If your Dr recommends a statin with zero discussion of diet changes snd exercise then run as fast as you can.

The side affects of statins are well known despite what your Dr might tell you. I have 3 MDs and one DO in my immediate family, all of them say statins are wildly over prescribed.

I would listen to your doctor and not the people here.

Lots more people die from cardiovascular disease than they do a statin.
1000% disagree. OP - Educate yourself and make your own informed decision. This used to be how humans worked. If Covid taught you nothing about how wrong the medical community can be then I suppose proceed with whatever your drug dealer, I mean Dr, is telling you.

Show all those MDs your posts and see what they say.

Having doctors in your family makes you more dangerous because you still know nothing about medicine but think you do.

Imagine if you were flying on an airplane and the person flying the plane said “I’m not really a pilot but my aunt is one so enjoy your flight.”
