I am mostly in the western half, Arizona primarily. I have looked at the Danner Tachyon, not comfortable. Under Armour Alegent Tactical is comfortable but the sole is too thick for my liking. The last boot I tried is Rocky C5C, updated form C4 version. Comfortable, good sole and a little awkward heel cup.
I may skip the boots and do a lightweight hiker boot. Arizona has too many things on the ground that poke, stab and slice.
I took my old insoles, placed them inside my old thick wool socks. When time to get close, I take my boots off and just wear the socks. Its always in my pack.
Its light weight, takes little room, easy to make, no thorns/spikes in foot, and you have an extra pair of socks if needed.
Merrel Reflex feels like a tennis shoe and super lightweight. I realize they are not mentioned with the top mountain boots but I've run them for two years. Under $150 and COMFORTABLE and LIGHT!
I picked up the Irish Setter Vaprtrek, nice and light but still not a good stalking boot. I am going to look at the DIY stalking boot post and or the softshoe deal.
Check these out from Russell Moccasin designed for stalking in Africa. Not cheap, but look like they would fit the bill of what your trying to accomplish, are custom made for you feet, and should protect your feet pretty well also. http://www.russellmoccasin.com/ivan-carters-thula-thula-ph/
