I've never used one of the step climbers. Looking at investing in one or the other. I was looking at the climber from NordicTrack. I also see used Stairmasters from time to time.

Is one better than the other?

I have the NordicTrack climber. It is a little bit hybrid climber and elliptical trainer. My wife and I like it. It is very easy on the joints. You can set the resistance high to make it more like a climber or low to be more like an elliptical. The online workouts (iFit) are nice to have and make it easier when motivation is low.

My neighborhood gym has a couple stair masters. I personally think they are better. You can basically workout your entire lower body and your core. You can really feel the difference. I don’t know much about the Nordic track thing, but I would take a stair master over any treadmill or elliptical. A indoor rowing machine would come in right behind a stair master. When using stair master I will sometimes wear a weighted vest as well. Usually after 20 minutes I’m worn out. Today I did 34 minutes with 25lb vest on. Heartbeat average was around 166-168 the entire time. It was a hard workout.

I have the Bowflex similar to the Nordic Track and a stair climber is way better. I'm thinking of selling my Bowflex and treadmill and getting either a stair machine or the Nordic Track X series.

Stepping on and off a box would probably be another option and gives you the up and down movement.
