Why oh why does this not exist? This would be the perfect pack for me. Good day pack configuration with real meat hauling capability.

Sigh. The search for the perfect pack continues!

I've been wishing for something similar to this too. I'm just hoping that enough others want something like this that they begin to offer it in the future.

I believe there is a new Spike Camp coming out. Maybe your wish will come true!

It's fairly easy with some k-connectors and creativity to attach a spike camp or express (with or without shoulder straps) to a bikini (and I imagine, though I've never done it, duplex) frame.

That's what I plan on doing with my X-ray.

Anyone else heard this?

From the Kifaru forum

Spike Camp/Express---- the Spike Camp has been a great pack for Kifaru and it has a cult like following! The sales, however, have dropped off enough to show a need for an update/re-design. We would love to keep these packs (spike camp/express) in the K line forever, but we like staying in business too and adding a few bells and whistles that people have been asking for should put the new addition back on top. I can't go into great detail on the new design, but the new version will probably have a side zipper, top pocket and more usable back/front pocket. It will also be slightly larger at the opening.

I’m a long time lurker on this forum and this thread compelled me to finally register - I feel your pain brother! I’ve racked my brain with the best way to run my Spike Camp on my Duplex frame. My idea was to run the Spike Camp tight against the Duplex but use straps that allowed me to loosen it and use it as a compression pack when I put an elk quarter between it and the frame. This set up along with a Grab-it would be ideal in my mind. It can be done but you’ll have a bit of strap to contend with, it gets a little noisy and floppy and I’m not sure the weight of the set up is efficient (never added it up to compare to other options though). I talked to Aron and Kevin at Kifaru and they were very patient listeners while I ran them through my ideas. I resigned myself to the fact that there are better options in their line-up to meet what I defined as my goal (simple, moderate weight, minimal straps, not too noisy or floppy, day-pack and load hauling). My Spike Camp is still my favorite pack for day hikes, peaks and shorter scouting trips. However, for hunting I now run the Duplex and Cargo Panel with a long side pocket against the middle of the frame (water bladder, kill kit, first aide kit, etc.) and 2 large side pockets and 2 medium side pockets. I attach all 4 side pockets split between the inside and outside of the CP. This with a ditty bag for extra stuff compressed between the CP and Duplex gets the job done for me. Sorry if this last part is a hijack of the thread but its my first post.

why not use a 22 mag, as the "spike camp" for the duplex frame?

i was looking at the different combinations of packs for a few weeks, and once i started really thinking what i will be doing with the pack as opposed to what i would like to potentially due some time, my needs changed almost immediately.

i day hunt for the most part, 85% of the time, the areas that i hunt elk here in washington don't require me to do any long pack ins to get to the elk i want to hunt, so no need for a 7000ci pack.
i do bak pack camp a couple times a year with my family,
used t be that i would haul everything,,,, now the kids are capable of hauling their own things so i just need to add a few more items, the versatility of the 22mag allows more pouches attached, also to be separated from frame to haul a dry sack of any size as well.

plenty of room and versatility for me, and it addresses the day hunting and hiking better for me.
it will also haul as much meat as my 180b frame can, and then some....

check out the 22mag

22 Mag looks like a good solution but I don't think it was available when I bought my Spike Camp several years ago (or at least I missed it). Anyway, if you already have a Spike Camp... it comes down to "time and money"

i hear ya on that
i am waiting for the new one to come out to hopefully get it for my wife, should be lighter weight than the 22mag and duplex, won't have the heavy load hauling capabilities but capable of more than she is,, also more cost effective...

check out the 22mag

I've come VERY close to pulling the trigger on the 22 mag a few times, but I just can't get past the two long side pockets that are useless to me, which make up about just under half (1400CI) of it's listed capacity, making it basically a 1600CI pack. I've found that around 2200CI is that sweet spot for me. I've also found that when pockets like that are full, they interfere with the drawing of my bow.

I do, however, really like the front loading of the 22 mag, much like my x-ray. I'm thinking I may just get a roll top pod to run under the x-ray when I need some extra space. This on the frame with a load sling is probably my best bet for what I want.

i thought about the side pockets getting in the way as well, and i do think if they had a cover even if it was a flap and not zipped shut it might be more appealing, they could just add a flap that could easily tuck into the pocket for long objects or over the top and under the strap for a lid for the pockets...

most of my hunting and camping is in good weather so I'm not to worried about it

i still think based on all the packs they offer it makes it difficult to choose which is the best for each individual but it also addresses all he options each wants...

I had a 22 mag and didn't like it because I really prefer top loaders.

However now that I know the new spike camp will not be duplex mountable AND the 22 mag can be had in 500d I'm debating picking up another one to try out. I'm going to try running the compression straps so they don't buckle in the center, but instead buckle back to the frame.

Sold my 22Mag and really miss it. Since the addition of a 500D version I'm probably gonna grab another one. Love the layout and it's a perfect size for short trips but I'm not a fan of the 1000D.

Without adding to the derailment of the thread, I had prolonged picking up a 22mag for a while because of the side pockets. I felt like they were useless and I would never need them. Well, I was mostly right, I don't use them, but they are not a nuisance at all and in fact I like the fact that they are there to use as overload or long objects. The pockets fold out of the way perfectly and are almost not noticable.

Also, i didn't know 500d was going to be added as an option until I read this thread, and I will be returning my 1000d version for 500d. Thanks!

I just got back from snow goose hunting and took 22 mag out to field with me. Worked great . I used side pockets for carrying boxes of shells out. My group knows I carry everything with me and they don't even bring an aspirin along.
