I’ve been poking around the South Dakota site since you can purchase preference points after September 15, but I’m having a hard time understanding all the different options. I’ve tried doing some searching but maybe I’m just lazy. I’d like to do a non-resident archery hunt for whitetail. I see there are preference points for that, but then there are preference point options for specific areas. Are those rifle hunts? Then I read something about otc deer tags, but it’s actually a draw now, and now I’m really confused. Any help understanding it is appreciated. Thanks

There are two statewide any-deer non resident archery tags.

ADNP-ST1- Season Dates: Sept. 1, 2025 - Jan. 1, 2026, STATEWIDE.
01: Valid for one Any Deer on both public and private land.
Nonresidents cannot start hunting on public lands until
Oct. 1, 2025. Maximum of ONE license of this type per
individual; 2,200 nonresident licenses available. ($375)

ADN-ST1- Season Dates: Sept. 1, 2025 - Jan. 1, 2026, STATEWIDE.
Private land only.
01: Valid for one Any Deer on private land only (excluding all public
lands and private lands leased for public hunting by GFP in Walk-In
Areas, CREP, and CHAP programs); Maximum of ONE license of
this type per individual; unlimited nonresident licenses ($375)

If you want to hunt public land, you need the first license I listed, and you'll need to apply for it. If you buy a preference point for that season, you'll have a 100% chance of drawing next year. If you don't buy a point, you'll have a roughly 50% chance of drawing that tag. Just remember applications are due around mid April.

If you hunt private land only, ADN-ST1 is available for purchase anytime starting in June.

Also, if you draw the ADNP-ST1 tag and want to hunt 35L or 27L, you'll need to apply for an access permit as well.
