Solid Broadheads

I'm thinking about making the switch to these. What have been your experiences with them? Also, I read that they were bought out by another company. Did that compromise the product in any way?

I am thinking about trying these, too. Hard to see the ~125% price increase over most other brands.

I would love to hear some personal experiences with them.

I tried them in 2015. Liked the head and the company but I feel there are much more durable options out there. I shot a whitetail doe with one because that is how I test all my broadheads before stepping up to elk with them. Head worked well enough but broke the ferrule when it hit the dirt on the far side of the doe. Nice riverbottom grass and dirt. Blades looked great still but I feel the real weak point in the head it the end of the ferrule where the main blade and bleeder lock in. The ferrule is very small in diameter anyway and then there are two slots in the end to create 4 posts to hold the blades in place with the slots. Those little posts are incredibly small and because of that small size cannot be very strong. I have watched all of the testing Steve did with these heads and don't believe he pulled any tricks with that testing and what he shows in the videos is what they observed. For me when I break a head on the first shot through a doe and its advertised as durable and reusable it just wasn't worth the price increase for me. I will say solid stood behind their product and replaced that head no questions asked didn't need a picture or want me to send the broken head in. Just asked what me address was and said the head would be in the mail that day. Great Customer service but I would rather not have to use their customer service everytime I shoot an animal with one of their heads. I had the 100 grain 3/4" bleeder model. Have since sold them and went back to Shuttle T's, Wac Em 3 blades, or Tooth of the Arrow.

You can see the skew of the main blade below in the pictures.

I like them a lot. I have had any other heads with that amount of cutting surface that grouped as well at longer distances.
I find them to very consistent. They hold an edge excellent. I haven't had any durability issues with them unless they hit each other in a target . In that case I seen the back edge damaged.
So far I have killed bear, deer, elk and moose with them and one game they been excellent. Big wound channels and excellent penetration. Haven't had one damaged during hunting yet that I couldn't just touch up on a work sharp and reuse.
I like them a lot.

I used them this season and they are extremely accurate. Only problem I see with them is price. If you lose one, ouch.. I lost 2 this year, both pass thru shots on animals and I could not find the arrow after. No warranty on that :). I also used a DRT broadhead that wasn't as durable (bent tip shooting into Rienhart target during micro-tuning) but it flew just as good out of my set up and I pinwheeled an elk at 70 yards, also a pass thru and I recovered the arrow. At half the price, once I run out of Soilds I will go with DRT's.

Hey guys,

just wanted to let you know that Steve did sell the Solid Broadhead company a few years ago. We still stock them, and sell them and obviously we all still use them. I personally have had outstanding results, especially in tuning, or actually not needing to. There have been some rumors that the product is somehow different or has been changed. That is not true. They are still built in the USA and are made with S30v steel. We're not super happy about the recent price increase either... but that is obviously out of our hands.. You can however always rely on your rokslide discount to help you out.

Thanks,
Rob

Those solids look like a good head...but its all about the steel quality- I don't know.

i do know those VPA heads are a great product at a decent price. Those things are solid [bad pun, i know]

I found out just how strong these VPA heads were on a hog hunt in norcal. I had a pig in the tall grass at 15yds turn as I released, catching him in the back 40. We followed the good blood trail a couple hundred yards into the thick manzanita...and this hog was huffing and grunting then turned to charge at about 20'.

I shot quickly through a small window of brush right in the forehead- Stoned the hog...and the head is still perfect. [Who needs a stinking backup pistol- grin] I wouldn't want to try that with a mech head.....

Funny thing. I damaged two VPA three bladed heads this year in game. Bent a blade on the first one, and the second one I have a crack in the support arm that comes out from the ferrule to the blade. Never had that happen before but these two heads are finished.

Wow...what were the circumstances? Any photos?
There are many guys shooting the VPA's through water buff/ cape buff that have to travel through bones with great success.

These were no buffalo that's for sure. Just deer. Both were pass throughs in the chest cavity. First one the arrow was buried in dirt, chalked it up to maybe hitting a rock. The other the arrow was laying on the ground, the blade was bent and the support truss was cracked.
I guess I can take pictures of the heads, didn't think that much of it to be honest.

Not sure about the "solid" heads but bye looking at the photos I must say the heads don't appear to be 1 piece of steel such as VPA's making the solid heads NOT so "solid". The name doesn't seem to fit the product with a name such as "solid" I expected to see a solid piece of steel in pics. May be great heads but I was expecting them to appear differently. Just my observation.

Well I think the names of most heads aren't much in the way of accurate description terms .

Here you go not sure now it will show in pictures but in person it's obvious.
If you look at the support truss you can see a clean break on a machine line. This a 100 grain head and the truss is noticeably thinner then the 125.

This is a 125 and the blade is bent. Surprisingly the head doesn't have a wobble in it however it no longer groups well. It's consistently right regardless of arrow and more noticeable at longer distance.

Beendare, That hog hunt scenario sounds fun. Good shooting. Trail153, Did you sent those heads in for warranty replacement ?

No I did not. First I didn't see what the warranty is exactly on the website sight. Secondly I don't think the heads really qualify if there is one. They did do what they where made to, killed the animal. I don't think they are designed to be indestructible or unbreakable. So with that in mind it's all part of the game. It is what it is. I am out three heads so far this year...sunk my arrow and a solid into the camp board after killing my moose, and damaged two vpa's here at home. Hope my luck continues in Kansas and New Mexico.

I haven't had to use the VPA warranty but heard its solid . Maybe lifetime ?? My VPA heads havnt needed to be replaced as of yet although I'm not slaying large bodied animal such as moose either (hope to in the future though). I have used the Magnus warranty to have Stingers replaced after pass-throughs on local blacktail. Those heads fly great and have excellent penetration in my experience. I just prefer to have a head that lasts and I can enjoy resharpening such as the VPA's . Seems like from your use that the solid heads work great . I my try em out as well.
