I’ll be truck camping in an area that could have grizzlies this fall. Has anyone ever used an electric fence with a solar fencer? I have smaller fiberglass poles and some of the white rope with wire woven into it for horse fence. Think this would be enough to deter a bear if combined with a relatively clean camp?

I use a solar fencer setup for deer in a dove sunflower plot. You have to get a strong enough fencer that is rated for bulls and bears. That is hard to come by on just a run of the mill solar fencer. I wanted mine strong, and to surround a several acre plot with 4 strands setup with an outer and inner perimeter. Deer are leas apt to jump it when the 3d effect is setup

So, i got a regular fencer for bears and bulls, i then got a medium sized solar panel. A charge controller, and a car battery. Works great. And I can attest it packs a punch..

I have not used this for bear country but plan on doing the same as you this fall. I am using poly wire as it is easy and packs tight. Make sure you have a good grounding rod and make sure there is nothing grounding it out... weeds, sticks, branches, etc. if you do multiple strands, connect them periodically around your fence.

No but we use them year-round with cows and pigs and goats, with the 5/16" fiberglass 'driveway stakes' for poles and the plain nylon(?) rope with wire woven into it. It wouldn't take five minutes to set one up around the perimeter of a truck camp.

Whether it would help stop a grizzly, I have no idea. The 3d idea presented above is interesting to me and would be easy enough to put into practice. Just bring extra stakes and extra wire.

I will say that in really dry weather it might be difficult to get a good jolt on an animal. I've touched ours barefooted in bone-dry conditions and you feel it, but nothing like on a damp day. I'm not a bear - and not hungry at the moment - so I don't know how much of a deterrent it would be. But I do know that it would buy you some degree of extra peace of mind and that could absolutely help you sleep better, and sleep is precious. So there's that.

Sleep is valuable enough to me that you now have me thinking I should bring a solar charger with us this fall, even though we won't be in grizzly country.

Yeah... the 3d effect is to help with deer jumping it... might help keep a bear from pushing through it. But you are looking to hit the nose... that shock wont get through the fur.

Even if it is dry... a really strong fencer will still pack the punch. Obviously wet will help with any fencer... i made the mistake of kneeling down and my arm hit mine.. again. Rated fir bulls and bears.. i thought it stopped my heart. Its powerful. This is the one I use

Thanks guys. I probably would’ve forgot to add a ground rod to the list and would end up trying to drive a tire iron into the ground to rig something up.
