Looking for everyday hiking hunting boots that's have decent ankle support, leather, with a softer sole than my crispi nevadas and kenetreks.

My unpopular opinion, Salomon quest 4. The only boot my feet or ankles have never had an issue with. Just realize they are not waterproof and won’t last as long. Tried about 7 different top of the line brands. My feet chose the zamberlans, but then I got blisters in the mountains. I don’t want to tape my feet every day. Tried different solutions, none worked except to give them away and go back to Salomon. I won’t waste any more money testing things when I found a solution for my feet.

These are comfy boots, I have a set of the older Salomons for my light hikers. Had pretty good durability out of them, and they are comfortable enough I'm on my 3rd pair over the years.

Try on the Hoka kaha GTX. Softest of the soft it actually has really good traction on everything but mud

Salomons are very comfy. I got a number of seasons out of my first pair. Still using two more pairs. One had an eyelet pull out, still works though.

I have 2 pair of the 4d gtx green and black. I like them however I was looking for a leather pair of boots that look a bit less tactical. The SO feels that my 4ds look tactical when we are going out for a night on the town. Normally wear my sqare toes but they don't provide much ankle support.

You want a pair of hiking/hunting boots for a night on the town?

Boots in bed huh?
Joking aside, there are tons of options. Take your wife to rei and tell her to pick out which ones are not too tactical. Pick the ones that are the most comfortable. Problem solved.

Jim Green African Rangers. All leather, handmade in South Africa, sub $200. Discovered them this winter while looking for a (close to) zero drop boot with a wide toe box, I’ve been flat tickled with mine. They’re based out of South Africa but they have some stock in the US, and you can actually get them on Amazon. Replace the insoles if you get a pair, but they’re awesome otherwise.

Thanks.

Haha, sorry not sorry! I’m planning to do a write up on them and share it here after I’ve worn them a bit more, probably spring time. But so far I’m impressed! Every 10 pairs purchased they’ll donate a pair to an African park ranger in need too, so they’re very conservation minded. Check out some YouTube reviews on them, specifically one from a channel called “Rose Anvil,” he was the first one to really mess with them in the US. He cuts a pair in half and shows their construction, they’re extremely well made but simple at the same time.

Check out Jim Green’s channel too, they show how they make them and everything. It’s really freakin’ cool! They make a few different models, and even some that would be great for western hunting. I’ll probably pick up a pair of their AR8 or Monsters at some point, they make a great boot.

But really, replace their stock insoles. They suck haha

EDIT: Also, you’ll need to treat the leather. They’re not waterproof, and Jim Green doesn’t advertise them as such. But you’ll need to treat them with Mink Oil or Obenauf’s or something.
