Social media sharing

I enjoy sharing a picture or two from my hunts or scouting trips on Facebook. I wont post up revealing photos of where I was though. Generally its a picture of a my camp (lots of my family cant believe ill sleep under a tarp) or one of my hunting partner & I or maybe one of me that someone else took. Being that I am a younger guy (24) I tend to see a generational gap (not always the case) between people who are against it and who are OK with it. Which I think it is interesting topic.

I'm not big into sharing so you will not see any success pics or stories from me. Personally I'm not out to make a name and really the only reason I hangout on the forums is to talk gear. My hunting is personal and I do share it with friends and family off-line.

A good buddy of mine that works for the government said if you value your freedom put nothing personal online and do not join Facebook. It isn't about secrets but the fact that once you post something to a server you have lost all rights to that info. It can never be changed or deleted by you, it can be sold or viewed by many you wouldn't even know about.

Like Shrek said, even harmless info can hurt you.

I have dialed back my online presence, but I still will post grip n grins on FB, for a couple reasons.

One, many of my friends on FB are avid hunters. We revel in each others success. I don't have FB friends who I wouldn't want at my home around my kids. I'm an open book there.
Two, For my FB friends who are not hunters, or even vegans, (Yep , I have some), I post the pictures, and links to hunting stories on my blog, to give them some perspective on my motivations for hunting. It has resulted in some worthwhile conversations.

And as for forums, I do have an ego and have to show that I can walk the walk, not just talk the talk....

I go back and forth. I have taken a lot of pages that I use to view on FB off my timeline, I realized I was wasting way to much time scrolling through pages. I do post some stuff, but try to limit what I post. I know a lot of people that are ok with people hunting but do not want to see all the hero shots. I have also been trying to keep myself from posting as much political and military stuff. I am hoping to get myself to where I the only thing that I really use FB for is to keep in contact with the few people that I am friends with.

I generally like to use FB just for messaging people as surfing it is a complete waste of time. I post the odd pic on FB but I try to keep it to a minimum as I hate those narcissistic posts where everything about that person is posted online. Too many people waste time being jealous of other peoples success instead of just going out and living their own content life. For hunting forums, though, I love seeing pics and hearing stories as that is one of the purposes of the forum. I find you can tell just by language who is puffing themselves up, and who is posting for everyones enjoyment. So personally I'll eat up peoples info and pics on forums, especially this one!

Vegans...Which type? I married the ranchers daughter and she doesn't eat meat. We don't buy "Government meat", I don't grill it unless I kill it. For my wife, it's a health thing. Take her out shooting gophers and you will see what I mean.

I love to see and hear hunting stories and am at the age where my kids are just beginning to hunt along with my friends so it is a huge deal to see these new hunter having success.

Instagram works well. Uploads photos from your smartphone and you can set it to private if ya like. It's pretty convenient to share with family and friends in mass. Folks can comment on your photos if they have an account. I don't feel real comfortable with other social media options, but I do like instagram.

I share most of my hunting pics on FB but haven't done much on forums. I do plan on sharing more pics and hunts on forums this fall.

To FB gets old fast. I tend to go in spurts on it. Heck I don't think I have been on it much since Christmas. My daughter now between that, snap chat, twitter, instagram and who knows what else she is an open book. Lol

This sums up my view as well.

I don't have any Facebook or any other typical social media. I am a member on 2 hunting forums, and I believe there is enough respect among fellow hunters that I don't mind posting a few details.

My niece posted a bunch of pictures, names, and a detailed story on Huntin Fool about our 2012 deer hunt without even telling us. I try not to be an ass about it, but I let everyone know I wasn't happy about it.

I am not a bunker weirdo, but it is nobody's business who and how big my family is, my hobbies, my vacation schedule, my pets names......on and on. I have been called paranoid, and sadly it is getting worse the older I get.
