Snowshoes for mid October?

How many of you actually pack snowshoes with you on a backcountry elk hunt in mid October. I've read several places that you can get a lot of snow dumped on you that time of year, but is carrying the extra weight of snowshoes worth it?

no need for them at all. even if you get hit by a big early storm, snowshoes really only work with a good base layer of snow.

Leave the snow shoes and take tire Chains, where I hunt during the second rifle plenty of trucks stay till spring just a tip. V/R

I second this along with Wyobowhunter. My shoes stay in the truck and I've yet to use them. I do bring micro-spikes along as I could see me needing those more than the shoes.
