Snake Boots

I am hunting in Oklahoma this year and with how wet it has been the grass is pretty high. It has been recommended that I get a pair of snake boots, but I don't know much about snake boots, wondering what everyone uses? I have a pair of nice leather hunting boots that go above my ankle but I feel like I need more protection, looking online it looks like most of the snake boots cover your calves. Is there a gaiter out there that you can use instead of having to buy a new pair of boots?

Might be worth looking into snake chaps. They offer more protection and are probably cheaper than snake boots. I had a pair of rocky snake boots years ago and was not a fan. Just not comfortable to wear.

I have had several lacrosse and rocky snake boots I wear them all season. Both started leaking after several years use. Didn't use them to hike very long distances so can't attest to there comfort for long hikes. They were fine for shorter hikes, a mile or less. I tried some chaps but they were bulky and very warm early season. I was going to switch to the chippewas this year and give them a try.

Chippewa best in the business, but need lots of break in
On the cheap everlast makes a pair that are the old danner sharptail design. The danners were the most comfortable for hiking

I wear snake boots every day.

texans42, I plan on hunting quail, deer, and turkey. In the 2 previous years in Oklahoma I didn't worry about it but last year on one of the leases I have access to a guy found and killed a 6 ft rattler in a ground blind.

I would look at Danner Pronghorn Snake boots or the Chippewa...The Danners don't require as much of a break in, if any.

I hunt the panhandlers a bunch, why I was asking.

I have the 18" Danners currently and like them ok. I've had lacrosse that were leaky junk and some Rockys that gave me blisters terrible. I haven't tried the Chippewa boots yet.

OKhunter, I too live in OK and often hunt in SW part of the state where rattlers are common, especially when hunting hogs in late spring through early fall. Several year ago, I tried a pair of snake boots but they were just too uncomfortable and didn't work for me. For the past 4 years, I've worn White Water snake gaiters which protect you to just below the knee. I've never had an occasion to "try them out", but I have no doubt they will do the job.

I have snake proof boots, gaiters, and chaps for various terrains/activities. Boots alone are rarely enough in most areas unless you're quite tall: snakes can rise up and bite up to several feet in the air. There's a variety of brands but frankly if you want truly protective gear you're gonna want to look at TurtleSkin Snake Armor. Much lighter and therefore flexible than any other brands of snake protective clothing I've ever used, which is why I'm now considering getting the full snake proof pants since I know they'll be functional. And the fabric is literally puncture-proof: even NASA uses their design to protect the crash bags for Mars landings...

I have worn both Russell and Muck snake boots . The Mucks are easy to pull on but I like both. I prefer boots over chaps. When it was hot I always talked myself out of putting the chaps on.

Finally a topic that I can speak to with authority. I live and hunt extensively in Texas. I hunt in snake boots no matter the weather. I've tried them all and finally fell in love about 10 years ago when I tried the Cabela's Pinnacle snake boots. Easy on/off and as comfortable as tennis shoes.

I hate snakes....with a passion. Even so, I found that when I was using boots that were uncomfortable or difficult to get on/off I would just skip wearing them sometimes. Never had an issue with that with the Cabela's Pinnacles. I am not one to shy away from spending money on gear but these are cheaper and more comfortable than anything on the market and believe me, I've tried all of the major brands.
