Do you smoke while hunting? Would the smell scare the animals away or mask human scent? I find myself switching to dip more often than not while I hunt.

Going hunting tomorrow for a few days and hope to have lots of does at least, so if I kill a buck early, may take it back up. At least for scientific purposes so I can report back. I'm always amazed at what you can get away with in the stand *when you aren't going to kill the deer*. So maybe I'll open up a cold one, rip a cig and see what happens. I did hear though that smoking in the stand draws wolves in. From several states away even.

My uncle is no joke when it comes to killing. He hunts squirrels with a 22 and kills over 200 every year. When our quail population was really good he dented the population like no other.
He hunts with a 7 STW that has a tremendous amount of dead deer under it. Before that he shot a 270. No telling how many deer that rifle killed.
I will see if I can get some pictures of his giant whitetails hanging on the wall. Everyone will laugh there asses of when you see all the hats on the racks.
He’ll be smoking while I’m taking pictures.

I know/knew several old timers that killed elk and deer almost every year while smoking. Lots of nice critters on their walls and full freezers.
I don't doubt that... but I think most people would agree that it's probably not the best strategy.. unless they come out with estrous flavored vaping fluid... damn can I patent that?

I take a case full of cigars for moose season. One benefit of spotting them miles away is the smell isnt much an issue and even when stalking the moose don't particularly care what you are. Although to be fair, its possible to walk like the most awkward noisy thing on the planet and still get within 30 yards of most moose I've seen. I just smoke them in camp or when its been a long day on the side of the mountain seeing nothing.

70 years ago our ”Greatest Generation” came home from WW2 and hunted, killing monster bucks while smoking non-filter cigarettes. Eventually it killed all of them, even the ones who quit smoking, in one way or another. It has probably killed many of our Korean War and Vietnam Vets as well. It is probably best to quit smoking all together. Add a few more hunting seasons and lay off the smokes.

I do not think smoking makes much of a difference though.

Here is a mulie buck who disregarded smokes back in 1950 outside Rifle, CO9AA76CED-D78B-4661-967B-D34D08A493C3.jpeg

I roll my own with sage and bitter brush. I also vape lavender oil if I’m worried about starting a fire. I’ve had good luck so far.

I really admire any smoker who can stop. I know it’s not easy. Luckily, I never started unlike my dad.

Same. We go in tomorrow to discuss with his doctor what his treatment options for his prostate, bladder, and lung cancer. Don't smoke. If you do, quit. Don't chew. If you do, quit. Everyone in your life will be forever thankful, including yourself if you heed that advice.

Had a buddy of mine on a fishing trip tell me that he was going to get me to quit smoking after 20 something years on and off. After we returned from the fishing trip he took me to this shop where they sold Vaporizers. They had all kinds of Gadgetry in this place and well over 100 different flavors of Vape Juice. I bought one of those damn things and two days later, never picked up another cigarette. Still Vaping though, even while hunting and haven't seen it as any deterrence. The only thing I will say to steer clear of is Peanut butter vape juice. I had the great idea to use that flavor on stand one hunt with the thinking that deer love Peanut butter, should work.

I had about 17 bazillion squirrels from sixteen counties away come running my way to find out what the smell was I was putting out. Sounded like a damn herd of elephants, had to go to the Chiropractor to adjust my neck the next day from all the turning this way and that knowing there was Bullwinkle right behind me. Nope....just squirrels.

I know a guide in NH that’s killed and seen more moose/bear/deer die than any one person I know by a long shot and smokes 2 packs a day, I asked him about it and he said if your worried about what you smell like your doing it all wrong, play the wind and it doesn’t matter.

I know people who use smoke from fires to mask scent on their clothes and they have had exceptional success!!
I met an old guy at the hospital my wife works, we were talking and he told me about it, Makes so much sense because the Indians used smoke to mask their odors and we all know the native Indians were excellent hunters. I tried it and it works.

It’s sort of known around these parts that blacktails come into the smell of cigarettes and the sound of a chainsaw. I’ve seen the chainsaw factor first hand.

On occasion I’ve put 90mins into a nice stogie will glassing. I smell like wood smoke already I don’t think the tobacco adds too much to it.

My buddy smokes sometimes in the blind, he always kills and sees just as much as I do, most of the time more. I don’t think it matters. Everything tells you it should but I haven’t seen it, and that’s on whitetails
