Smith and Wesson .460

Hey guys, looking to get a smith and Wesson .460. Have some questions. Main question is I held one and I honestly can’t remember the barrel length but It almost felt unstable by being so heavy. Maybe I’m a wimp idk. Is that something you get used to? Does it balance with the heavy weight for legit off hand shooting? Yes most of the time I’ll have it on a tripod but I want to be able to off hand it to some extent. The shop I go to has the 7.5” performance center edition and I feel that’s probably a better bet

What would a fair, honest range be with practice with red dot on top?

Is the recoil crazy? From what I’ve seen in videos it doesn’t seem like off the way like you would expect. Thanks!

Why bother with the sissy-girlie .460??? Is it for your grandmother?

Okay, I'm being a complete smart ass but let me give me 2 cents even if it might be indirectly helpful.

I have a S&W 500 Mag (8 3/8 barrel with compensator) and you should consider it. It is by far my favorite pistol to shoot. I shoot 15-25 rounds every time I hit the desert, My 15 year old son (avg. size kid) can handle it no problem.

When shooting the hotter load, say over 2100 FPE (hottest factory loads are ~2800 FPE), it takes some practice but absolutly doable. I bought my 500 Mag 2.5 years ago and have easily shot 200 rounds in that time with no broken wrists, etc.

I know the .460 can shot 3 different cartiridges, which is very appealing as the 500 Mag ammo is at least $2.50/RD and usually $3+.

Just offering my expereince on the .460's big brother.

I have a .460 with 5" barrel. For me that's the perfect length for balance on that heavy a revolver. The recoil is not unmanageable. It's more of a slow 'bounce' rather than a sharp jolt. In fact, I sold both my .44's after getting the .460 because I much prefer the .460. Accurate as well. I just use open sights so can't comment on the red dot. I often practice shooting with one hand, usually with 45 Colt loads. Got a Kenai Gunfighter chest holster to it's easy to carry.

The 460 is far ballistically superior to the 500. It’s a legitimate 200 yard round if you can do your part. The recoil is no big deal. It’s a fun gun to shoot. The concussion is by far worse than the recoil. I have a smith 460 with a 8 3/8 barrel topped off with warren rings and a Burris 2x7 and a couple hundred rounds all for $1500 if you’re interested

I'd get one with a way to mount a bipod. They weigh more than many rifles. My 460 is a no joke 200 plus yard hunter.
