Butane soldering irons that can also be used as a micro torch, if you remove the soldering tip. Couple ounces, 8" long or so.

I’ve used this for years, weighs 1.5 oz without the lighter in it. Just slip a bic in it and you’re ready to go

That sounds almost perfect. Is it hard to turn the torch sideways inside the stove? The "pencil" style ones might work better.

Probably going to go with a pencil torch. Should weigh about the same as a grill igniter and throw a lot more flame.

Any clue what a reputable brand is, or just read the reviews on amazon?

Thanks!

I read the thread better and I think it may not be the best for your needs, it would fit fine but the flame goes about 2" and you have to keep the trigger depressed to stay on, it may be tricky with the tight fit you have. If you can fit your fist in it then you would be fine but otherwise maybe not.

Came across the SOTO Pocket Torch XT and think I'm going to give it a whirl. Should be decent quality, since they make stoves that I know people here use and like. Cool how it extends. Should be a grill igniter on steroids. Lightweight. Also pretty cool how you can refill it from an isopro fuel canister in the field.

The problem with the above product and those discussed in this thread is right here in the above manufactures statement: CAUTION: The torch may not ignite under colder temperatures or high altitudes above 5,000 ft. / 1,500m.

Yeah, I saw that. We were at 7500' and it was 10 below this weekend.

Is that pretty much universal that they all don't work the best at altitude and in colder temps?

It was snowing like crazy. It was a pain in the butt to get the fire going with a grill igniter and pyro putty. Definitely had to nurse it until it was roaring.

Had it going a couple times and thought it would take off, but it ended up going out.

Yes it is. A Bic lighter is about the most reliable flame source you can have.

I generally use a product like this: https://www.amazon.com/Esbit-1300-Degree-Smokeless-Tablets-Emergency/dp/B0000WR6W8

And just light it by lighting wadded paper, toilet paper... that is underneath it.

Almost bought these. Read that they smell crazy like shrimp, even through the package and multiple other containers.

Dunno if I want a sushi bar inside my tent in griz country. Any alternatives?

I have bought the military trioxane tablets many times and never noticed any smell at all. They burn blue hot and work great. Expensive, but if you buy on eBay you can find deals that aren’t too bad.

I'm a cuban cigar smoker even while hunting and I will tell you that the Vertigo lighter has worked for me at 8000+ ft in California, snow conditions in Idaho, and windy conditions in New Mexico while hunting. And yes I play the wind and was successful harvesting a 6x6 bull elk opening morning in New Mexico this year. If I use the lighter a couple times a day, it will last at least 2 weeks before I need to refill.

Below is the link or just search for Vertigo Lotus Cyclone torch ligher. 2 pack is about $15. Majority of torch lighters from gas stations are crap and don't work at high elevation.

I picked one of these up after reading this thread. Worked great at 10500’ and single digit temps in third rifle. Kept it in my pocket to keep warm.

I like it !

Glad you liked it, I may need to get another one mine wasn't working so well this year and I tried 3 different lighters, it is about 7 years old so I've gotten my money out of it.
