Wal-mart sells small 5'x8' sil tarps for like $10 in with all the camping stuff. I am sure it is nothing special but might be perfect for this.

I think you're good to not get him the Esbit, but my "nephew"(best friends son) is turning 10 in August and I'm going to do one of those for him. He's to the point he needs to get out more with us, and I think that would be awesome for him. I second the books. Bought my buddy's younger son the "Who pooped in the Park" book and his eyes lit up when he say the title. Even asked his mom if he could say it out loud. There's a few cool pamphlets you could add from the local book store...identifying plants, berries, trees, bird book, just stuff to fuel the interest and knowledge of the outdoors. I when I say pamphlets, I'm talking some tri-folded laminated small guides I've seen at the local bookstore. Usually region specific.

Ya I am getting him a 6x8 at lowes, it cost $4. That way he can learn to pitch an A-frame and lean-to style shelter.

2 more things I am adding, Hand warmers (because I never use the ones I have) and a Rokslide hat. I never wear hats and he loves hats. I will get a pic of us with his hat and kit at his party.

Been buried at work. Glowsticks and kids' band aids hit the post office about 2 1/2 hours ago. Supposed to get to you Thursday.

Going out with the wife tonight for dinner and to get everything on my list....

I am going to type up a set of things he has to do with the kit. So far I have erect a a frame and lean-to shelter with the tarp and figure out which way each side of his house is facing with the compass. Then in 2 weeks we are all going camping and he has to catch a fish with the minimal fishing kit I am giving him which is Line, hook, lead weight and snap swivel.

If you have any other ideas let me know.

I would have some sort of lesson on how to use the signaling mirror. Also, some knot tying lessons for basic knots with real life usage examples so they stick in memory

Here is the pick of what's going in the pack. I left out a few things but our budget for kids bday was getting pushed.
