Do you use a sleeping bag liner to help keep the bag clean and add a little warmth or do you wear a base layer to sleep in?

I wear base layers as a minimum if its warm (keeps bag cleaner) and keep adding layers as it gets colder, including zip-off heavy long underwear, Attack pants and Microtex shirt, Peloton 240 full zip hoody, and even my Super Down hooded jacket and pants. With all the above on, I'd estimate the bag rating is lowered by 15* F or more....from +15* down to zero or below assuming you are on a good pad. Wearing damp or wet clothes/socks to bed dries them out as well....just don't overheat and sweat...reverse effect. Good luck!

^^^^this. I pretty much do the same thing as stated above. If I'm spiked out and I need to dry my clothes, I'll wear them to bed, otherwise I just wear a base layer, and add puffy pants/jacket as needed for warmth.

Would you dry out like this in a down bag or only synthetic? Thanks

I wear layers in a KUIU super down bag these days and before that in a synthetic. Years ago I wore layers in a North Face Blue Kazoo down bag. No issues in CO or Alaska.

I used to only use synthetic bags because I didn’t want to take the chance with down. Then when I took the plunge and started using quilts, I started with the treated down and never looked back. I haven’t used a synthetic bag in over 6 years now, and I haven’t experienced any problems going to bed in wet clothes. Although it’s not the most comfortable way to start the night, typically after a few minutes you warm up and then it’s a breeze, always wake up warm and dry the next day.

Awesome, thanks. Just switched to a down quilt also and had been nervous about getting it wet.

I always wear base layers. I've switched to all merino base layers and I notice that it really helps keep the bag from smelling like human funk.

Used to do the bag liner thing, but got smart and switched to merino base layers. Warmer than a liner and you don’t have to hop around if you wear them outside of your sleeping bag.

Thanks for all of the great information. I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a WM Terralite or Nemo Riff and was thinking that a good mid weight merino base layer could make either bag more effective into the later months elk hunting
