Is a sleep system that is about 83 ounces (5 or so lbs) relatively light? Or am I still on the heavy end. It would theoretically be a system that will keep me warm into the single digits.
Includes Quilt, Bivy, Pad, and Tarp...

Light is a irrelevant statement really with gear IMO. It really bowls down to....is it light enough for you.

I run my sleep system a tad heavier then some but it will get me through any weather, warm and comfortably. That's what's important to me. So if this weight is with the gear you want then, yes, its light enough.

Don't get wrapped up with the huge weight thing. If you have great gear and use it, a couple of extra pounds won't kill you. BUT I'm sure some people on here will chime in and say, go ultra light because that extra 2lbs of gear will destroy your hunt. It won't. I just tell them, get in better shape so 2lbs is nothing.

When it comes to sleep gear (talking sleeping bag and pad), it's worth a few extra ounces if it means you're more comfortable and can get restful sleep. Case in point, I recently bought a short length pad with the thought that I'd use my pack under my feet...it took only one night before I knew it was more trouble than it is worth and didn't allow me to sleep comfortably. Returned it for a larger size pad that weighed 4oz more...well worth it IMO.

If you can save weight on the shelter (while not compromising your ability to stay dry) then that's where I'd start if I wanted to cut weight off your sleep system.

I hear ya Joe. I have not gotten bitten by the UL bug, I guess I was guess I was more curious how this system compares to the weight of others. I come from a backpacking background where I muscled moderately heavy loads b/c I was comfortable with my system and it was what I could afford. However, now I am thinking about re-tooling so to speak.

My main focus I would say is versatility, as I do not have the funds to buy a piece of gear for every type of hike, weather, hunt etc.. It is nice to have some gear that can be used across several situations.

Anyway, in the end I was just curious how this system compared to the weight of others.

Also, weight is not irrelevant when one is talking about helicopter payloads or being flown in with mutliple people. Gotta limit the number of flights ;)

theres a thread on here where everyone listed their sleep system weight, what it includes, and monetary investment. good info.
personally i think around 5lbs is a good bet. any heavier and you either have a 4 season shelter cus thats what you need or you could buy better stuff, budget allowing. any lighter and youre probably sacrificing in certain aspects.

Yea. That was with a quilt, bivy, pad and megatarp. 0 degree quilt.. I will have to look for that thread. Thanks F.T.F.
