If everything in life has a purpose, what the eff is the mosquito's? Things are frigging useless. And they absolutely devour me for some reason, I'll be sitting next to someone that does not have a single bite and I will have a dozen.

So the problem...my wife made our front porch all nice and comfortable. Amazing place to drink a beer and wind down after we put the baby to bed. Until the mosquitos come out and I'll get almost carried away. "My bites have bites right now"--true story. It's reached a major frustration point. When I am hiking or fishing, I'll throw on some 30% DEET and that will be fine, that stuff works. That's not really something I want to be doing just to sit on my porch.

So far I tried:
1) Citronella candles (did absolutely nothing)
2) Tiki torch brand mosquito repeller (did absolutely nothing AND gave me a sore throat and runny nose)
3) OFF clip on fan, 31% metafluthrin (only tested last night so small sample size, seemed to help significantly but I still got a couple bites on my ankles and wondering if there is a better solution)

So what are the best solutions out there? I am debating a Thermacell but it seems to be the cost of those pads are going to add up quickly in this type of scenario. Is it reasonable to expect that to perform well in this type of area? I am not afraid to drop some dime on something that I know is going to work well but I want some real world reviews first.

There's nothing I can do that I know of to control the population. I have vegetation that is non negotiable, not cutting it down. I don't have any standing water to breed them, although I am sure some neighbors around do because there aren't any ponds or swamps.

I spray my yard/flowers about twice a summer with Off brand bug spray that you attach to your hose. I get them at Home depot but have seen them all over. They really nock the population down for about 4-6 weeks at a time.

Keep lawn short. I mix permethrin in my sprayer and spray property for ticks and mosquitos. Buy it in the livestock area at fleet farm. about as "safe" as you can buy in the pesticide arena. Really helps. Mosquito Magnet machines work well also as do thermacell.

I've always found long sleeve shirts and pants to be the best, even during the middle of summer. Just don't be too active or you'll start sweating. Might consider a fan, too.

From a friend

1 bottle of blue mint mouthwash
3 bottles (per 12 oz) of stale beer (take the cheapest – it works as well)
3 cups of Epsom salt
mix and spray yard/ bushes...

The cheap mosquito coils that you can buy at walmart in the camping section work great. They are very inexpensive. You just light the end and let it smolder. I now use them instead of a thermacell when treestand hunting.

There is a mosquito trap, (it may be the mosquito magnet mentioned above) my neighbor use to use in North Carolina and he swore by it. His family lived in their backyard during the summer and were never once really bothered by mosquito.

My wife and I went a different route, we screened in our porch and that worked well for us. The citronella candles, as you mentioned are useless, the therm-a-cell is the only product like that I have found to work in a localized area.

Those of us who live in the southeastern US couldn't hunt before December if it weren't for our Thermacells.

Seriously, we may argue about Ford v Chevy, Budweiser v Miller, or Realtree v Mossy Oak. But nobody argues that Thermacell is the best way to keep away mosquitoes.

Place the thermacell about 10' upwind or maybe under a table and forget about it.

They've been horrible here in Alaska due to all the moisture. I've found that keeping the grass short, minimizing lawn watering and spraying Backyard Bug Control on the perimeter surrounding the lawn including the trees has helped quite a bit

We ended up putting up a bat box. Seems to have worked well for the last few years.

I spray the yard with the hose end stuff [$10 a bottle] but found it works much better if you spray at dusk vs the middle of the day.

thermacell works....I hate those citronella candles and the coils. I've heard those big units work good if placed in a area with little wind.
