I don’t have any experience with Kryptec or First Lite but have systems from Kuiu and Sitka and here are my observations: Sitka pieces have more of an all-around fit, it’s gonna be very comfortable for most if not all people. Kuiu pieces on the other hand have a very athletic fit so unless you are skinny the clothing can feel a little tight, not as baggy as Sitka. However this is in a fitting room setting. On my elk hunt this year I brought both systems and I switched between them every other day to compare for a little over two weeks. I got to test them both in a variety of weather conditions. Within each system I used a merino base, a mid layer, and a synthetic puffy insulation layer for my tops and I had a pair of pants from each company to complete the system. I didn’t get the chance to use rain gear because there was no rain this year. Using both systems the way they were designed I found that although the Kuiu was a little tighter, my freedom of movement was never restricted so I was just as comfortable as I was with Sitka. I was really impressed with how fast the Kuiu system dried compared to the Sitka though, and it made a difference in comfort as well. The Sitka stuff dried quick enough and I was never uncomfortable, but the Kuiu stuff just did it quicker and I was more comfortable. The other big factor was the weight between the two systems. I didn’t think the weight of the clothes was ever gonna be a factor but it was. I didn’t weigh them so I can’t give you any hard numbers but I certainly started feeling the difference throughout the day especially towards the end of the hunt. The Sitka stuff was also bulkier and didn’t pack down as tight. Overall if I had to choose one it’d be Kuiu, but really you’re not gonna be at a terrible disadvantage with either system since they both work really well.

I have Sitka and First Lite gear. I haven't been real happy with my Obsidian pants I have 4 pair and have seams coming loose on 2. I was told to send them back under warranty but thats a lot of hassle for something I can get done local I guess I just expected more out of pants that cost that much. I've been happy with everything else I have in First Lite. All my Sitka stuff has been bomb proof and probably what I'll buy more of in the future when needed.

In the post below that where he’s on his back shooting a squirrel you can see them pretty clearly too. Long side vent zippers with front cargo pockets and knee pads- looks a lot like the SG De Havilland pant

I'm new'ish to hunting. Could someone please share with me what the hatred/distaste for Kuiu is?

I have and use all 4 of the brands you are interested in. KUIU is the one I have the most of for both mountain and midwest hunting.
Light weight, dries quickly, and tough. The Verde camo seems to work well wherever I use it.

Each company has plenty to like, and probably dislike as well if you believe everything you see on social media. If I see another Tick Tock video of a huntress doing a shoe flip in head to toe Sitka I may burn my fanatic jacket!

What I have found from the 4 brands mentioned above is that when paying full price, KUIU gives you the most bang for your buck.

Some of the people on this forum have had issues with some of the high ups at Kuiu which is why it gets bashed more than other companies. Kuiu does a LOT for conservation, especially sheep, and even though the original owner Jason (who also started and sold Sitka) passed away, the brand is still developing new products and moving forward with their innovations.

Kryptek is owned my current and retired military people and have some amazing products as well. I know the least about their line, but it’s definitely quality. Their stuff can be found at killer prices on Camofire regularly.

First Lite is now owned by a large company which now has bought FHF and MeatEater. I tried their pants and was not impressed, which is why I tried Sitka and Kuiu. The First Lite merino is amazing!! The Uncompagre jacket is solid as well.

Sitka does a great job marketing and has great gear as well, but it’s the most expensive. It’s conveniently found at many large retailers so you can try it on before you buy.

If I was starting over on a budget, I would look hard at SKRE as well.

Good luck, sir!

Thanks, Matt

If your budget is a grand, I definitely recommend Kryptek. I had a similar budget, and I researched my brains out before I pulled the trigger. But it came down to the fact that between Kryptek’s own promotions and their availability on Amazon and CamoFire, they just seem to be the best value for the budget minded.

I got through a hellaciously wet elk rifle season in the Oregon Coast Range and was very happy with how my Kryptek performed. I got way too warm on many occasions in my Lykos II jacket, with the right layering I could have been in weather even nastier than the high 30’s to mid 40’s with wind and driving rain that we had.

Sizing can be a little inconsistent from one piece to the next, but their customer service is top notch so I was able to easily swap a few things that didn’t fit.

EDIT: I don’t get the Kuiu hate either, but they were my second place choice for whatever that’s worth. I run their Pro Pack system and love it.

good luck!

Good stuff Matt, thanks. I'm familiar with the various brands I just wasn't aware Kuiu was hated by a large group of people.

My first year hunting I used Walmart Realtree stuff. I froze my butt off.

Second year I used the same gear but added a waterproof/windproof/insulated jacket and bibs from BassPro, for late season. I was warm.

Third year I invested in some Kuiu to replace the Walmart gear. I do mostly treestand and ground blind hunting. I understand Kuiu is made for active hunting out west, not sitting stationary. But I use my Kuiu pieces for early and mid season... and then as base layers and mid layers for late season. When it gets colder I throw the BassPro bibs/jacket over top. I'm very toasty. The Kuiu stuff is also great when I'm scouting and hiking all over God's green earth. It's only my first season using it but it seems made well and durable. I don't baby my gear. Briars, rocks, brush, I go through it all.

Sorry I'm ranting now. My question still remains. What are the issues people have with Kuiu? Even your explanation was vague. Something about an issue with leadership.

So that would take quite a bit to explain - and years of back reading the forums. Some people hate it because there’s a stereotype that grew out of using their stuff.

I would summarize as Kuiu started as a rejection of status quo - they did direct to consumer, their own camo, and literally started from a freaking awesome blog asking simply what people wanted. A lot of us were into it, from the very beginning. What happened? They grew, and grew and grew, and had some pains doing it. Some of those pains were total bullshit, and some were understandable. If you want specific examples google is your path. They were awesome when they were small, innovating, and really customer first. What is it today? Well I can’t tell you because they haven’t managed their “transparent” brand the same way they have in the past. Don’t kid yourself they make some really solid stuff, but they also aren’t the end all. People really got into the brand (and that really made people hate it as well), and then the brand went crazy - not all of us liked where it went. Hell they used to have a forum! They had to shut it down because they just got too much heat, and a lot of those issues I reference show up there.

Good example that contrasts - Stone Glacier started quite a while ago, and has grown a ton, but always managed to stay engaged with its customers. When I call their I talk to someone who really uses the stuff and gets after it. Kurt (their founder) was literally on the forum this morning explaining their design and product to people with the rangefinder pouch. I go into the shop and they treat you like family. Kuiu started like that, but it’s something else entirely now, and that’s what really rubs people.

They all make great stuff - use what you want and makes you happy. You asked why people have a rub with Kuiu? - let me harken back to the ads of dude repelling down a cliff with a longbow.......good time. So long ago it seems.

Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to share that. The long bow ad sounds hilarious.

Though I wasn't a part of all this when it happened, I get what you mean.

Shortly after I purchased some of my Kuiu gear I discovered First Lite. I like First Lite's pattern more. I love Meat Eater. I like Steven Rinella as a person, who he is, and what he stands for. I appreciate all of the contributions First Lite makes towards conservation. I like how they engage with their customers. I like their branding, marketing, and logo. I enjoyed Steve's "Das Boat" show he put on YouTube.

What's my point? Kuiu has no connection to me. It's just clothing. First Lite on the other hand has a connection to me.

I'm a graphic designer professionally. I work in marketing. First Lite does it right. Call me silly, but they are really sucking me in and making me want to get rid of all my Kuiu gear and buy First Lite instead. Not just because of the connection, but I simply like their pattern more. The deer don't care, I get it, but it makes me happy. And I know, we can own gear from multiple companies. I don't have to actually get rid of my Kuiu but I am one of those weirdos who likes my gear to be all the same brand. Call it a fanboy if you will. I'm not denying it.

But my Kuiu stuff does work very well. I like it a lot, functionally. This is a battle that comes up in my head every time I get a sizeable chunk of disposable income.

Totally agree. FL Fusion is my fave pattern whether the deer like it or not. Look good, ya feel good. Fanboy? probably.

They are all good. It’s kinda a (Ford vs Chevy vs dodge) thing. I live in northwest Washington and I can say that the only stuff I have stayed dry in is the Kuiu rain gear. I have Kuiu, Sitka and kryptek and like the pieces I have. I’ve had First lite and just wasn’t a fan.

Big First Lite and Sitka fan here.

First Lite Merino stuff is the best!

Sitka's insulating pieces are great!

Sorry to hear that. Don't know what to tell you. I saved a ton on every piece I bought last year.
You know what.... apparently when I was on Kryptek's website yesterday everything was on sale. When I went back today and the prices are much different. That NJord jacket for instance is $170 now, on Krytek's site. It's still $113 on BowhuntingOutlet.

I redact my previous grumbling.

Guess who's buying some kryptek this weekend?!

I watched the video on their about how they formed the company. Badass. Super awesome.

Do you have any recommendations on specific garments? They seem to have a lotttttttt of options.

Yard Candy,
I have the Vellus jacket and pants for colder weather (its very quiet, low nap fleece and wind and water proof) and the Dalibor jacket and pants for more early season temps. I also have the Vellus vest and Cadag pants. I haven't worn the Cadags yet because I haven't been in weather cold enough to require more than the Vellus pants, which have kept me warm in the low teens. Also have a Kratos packable Primaloft jacket that has earned a permanent place in my pack. One of my most versatile and favorite pieces. Naturally, I layer and trade base garments in and out depending on temps.

I think it's worth noting that I'm a stillhunter/tracker and a glasser/stalker. I don't sit sedentary in a tree stand all day. And this is what works for me. YMMV.
