Sitka HW Hoody vs Stone Glacier Helio Hoody (Warmth wise)

I have tried about all the mid weight fleece offerings except Sitka HW Hoody. I really do not want to order it just to compare. I currently am using the SG Helio hoody and like it, but feel its not that warm, but does breath really well. The main reason is not that warm is its basically zero wind resistance by design.

For those that have used both, is the Sitka have a thicker fleece and and/or is the weave of the fabric tighter holding out a little bit of wind.

Thanks,

Adam

I don’t have experience with the stone glacier but from what your saying, having owned a few Heavy weight Sitka pieces, it’s got no wind resistance.

The discontinued traverse hoody is what you want.

Yeah for wind resistance and warmth it was hard to beat KUIU Strongfleece 260

I've had both, agree the Sitka piece is warmer but that's it.

I don't own the Sitka HW anymore but have 3 Helios fleece. For me the fit is perfect.

which version of the Helio do you have? The newest has grid fleece, the prior did not. I have both. I find them to be very similar, but I do prefer the pocket layout of the Helio for hiking. I’m a Large in the HW Hoody and a M in the Helio, both fit great. Both dry fast. It’s really a preference thing in my opinion.

Great suggestion and may be the answer
Let me caution you about wind shirts. I have bought 2 so far and neither appreciably diminish the wind. They work great if it is 60-65 degrees and the wind makes you a bit cool. That is about it. I own a first lite ridgeline and what ever the black ovis one is called. I like the black ovis one a lot but to call it a wind shirt is laughable. I bought both expecting a wind breaker. A $10 wind breaker from walmart will grossly outperform both in wind stoppage. I'm sure there are great "wind shirts" out there. I'm just saying don't assume they will perform how you expect. Get as much user feedback as you can.

In regards to the core heavyweight hoody, it is one of my favorite pieces. Very versatile. Zero wind stoppage.

I dont disagree. FLs Ridgeline has appeared to be a huge miss in the wind stoppage category and this has been discussed alot on the forum. Just like all other gear, you get what you pay for. Pretty much any sitka layer with gore windstopper is amazing at stopping wind they may not be as breathable as some would like though. A patagonia houdini is an amazing option too. Ive recognized the benefits to a wind layer and the right wind layer layered in the right position in my system that I now own I think 5 or 6 different ones and use them according to conditions and need. I think the dedicated wind layer is the most under used, misused, and misunderstood layer for western hunters today.

I agree fully. I've began shifting to sitka for this very reason. I have heard good things about the houdini.

Patagonia R1 Air hoodie with Houdini over it when the wind or light to mid precipitation pick up. Best option I’ve found.
