After a lengthy hiatus from western big game hunting, I have clearance to get back to chasing big game. So I promptly put in for the Kodiak goat draw for 2026, and am researching BC hunts if I don’t draw. So now I am researching gear and adding some pieces to my kit. For the last few years I have been running merino base layers for waterfowl and white tails and I have no synthetic base layers, and am not sure what I want to add.
I’m super sweaty, so I am torn between potentially staying damp in merinos but not stinking to high hell, or drying quicker but potentially being stinky after a couple days. In all fairness, I haven’t worn synthetic underwear in years and threw out the polypro it stunk so bad, but maybe the newer stuff with Polygiene is better. A few of the lists for Kodiak/Alaska recommend synthetics since they dry faster, and I know that the way I sweat I will be wet. It’s so bad I’ll probably pack a second set to wear after the initial climb.
Right now I’m leaning towards adding core lightweight hoodie and bottoms, and am looking at the heavyweight hoodie baselayer. Does anyone know how the heavyweight hoodie (base layer) compares in weight to what was the traverse/grinder? I have the grinder in marsh and have used that for years as my midlayer. I just picked up a traverse quarter zip (similar to the grinder) in open country. No sense in buying the heavyweight hoodie and doubling up if the heavyweight baselayer hoodie is similar.
