We're getting a single guard llama for our alpacas. Since they are herd animals, is there any issue with using just 1 llama for packing? It'd be left at camp by itself which is my main concern.

If I leave one Llama in the pasture and take the rest around the block they are whining and nervous the whole time. They are a pack animal and act accordingly. Also not sure a packer will be a good guard llama, kind of opposite personalities, but I could be wrong on that one.

Also, if your one Llama ever gets free of it's lead in the Wilderness you'll have to hope you can get it back by shaking a bag of Sweet Grain, and that's if you even witness it coming loose, as in not at night while you are asleep in the tent. When you have 2 or more Llamas they will never stray far from the others so that's not usually a huge issue. I could see a solo llama getting free and basically saying sayonara to you. They have basically zero loyalty to humans.

How many alpacas you got out of curiosity? What kind predator issues have you encountered? I currently have 4. We are looking for 4 more

I would have 2 of them personally, the guy we rent from every year won’t rent singles.
