I’ve been wanting to go hunting out west, but I don’t have the funding right now. Plus, it’s on the other side of the country from kentucky. Does anyone have any ideas of a way to stimulate western hunting around here to prepare for a trip?

There is a thread on here somewhere about backcountry hunting in the east. There a plenty of places in the east to backcountry hunt whitetails and turkeys, just smaller and less conspicuous on a map.

East KY had some pretty sizable chunks of public when I looked into that state several years ago. Most states even out east have big enough public to get a few miles in and get your feet wet so to speak. Smokey mountains, Appalachian mntns, Land between the lakes also comes to mind. I mean it is certainly not true ‘backcountry’ like out West but there is room to get lost and have a blast out there for sure.

I have found places to pack in and hunt even here in S FL so trust me it is possible just about anywhere

I'm like 30 minutes from led between the lakes. I've squirrel hunted there but never thought about hunting and camping.

Yea, a few years ago I planned on bringing my Jon boat and pulling up to a hard to reach area and setting up a base camp. Not exactly backcountry style but it would be fun.

I have been doing the same thing. Just make sure you check with the local trout troopers about the camping laws. I will suggest an area i have found some big deer in kentucky

I'm just across the river from LBL and spend quite a bit of time there. You can hike in as far off the road as you'd like...up, down, over, through. It's a good trip and if you put your time in, the hunting can be pretty awesome. Be sure you get the backcountry camp permit along with hunting permit.

Any good trails that have a cool destination? Stream, bluff \, etc.

Some of the reclaimed strip mine areas in eastern KY can emulate western hunting because you can see long distances. But unfortunately a lot of these areas area also close to roads or just have that feel of being unnatural. Big South Fork National River and Rec. area has some of the most remote forests in the east, so that is also an option.

Us “back East” Midwestern guys gotta take what we can get. Even if it’s not 10 miles back anything is better then nothing. I usually just car camp but even then I get off the beaten path and rarely see anyone. I’m hoping to motorcycle camp this summer and I know I can get my sportster in far enough to get away from most. And if I do see someone they will probably be a like minded individual. The only time I met people I didn’t like was in a Campground. I really try to avoid those.

If you are out west and hike 10 miles back in....... You should have come in the other direction, would have been closer.
