Anyone have first hand knowledge of these things? I have a couple old heirloom long guns, I keep them oiled but would also like a little extra protection from safe dings. I’ve always stored them without a case, wondering if these are OK.

Yes they work fine. They can't hold moisture. That means they can't absorb it off the gun either.
As long as your guns are dry going in they will be fine.
I keep all my guns in socks inside the safe to prevent safe dings and rubbing.

I use them so I don’t ding up the guns crammed into the safe. I like them for rust control also…you can usually catch a deal on the six packs at Cabelas.

I had a BLR and it was in a sock. Pulled it out for it's annual cleaning and there were a series of pits where moisture had somehow gotten in. Gun was a safe queen, not used and kept in safe. None of the other guns had issues - just that one...

If by any chance those guns may have some monetary value, I wouldn't do anything until I checked it out.

The socks are good, but the safe has to have a dehumidifier of some sort. The socks breath, which is good, but humidity and condensation can still get you.

If you don’t dehumidify, the VCI bags are a better option.

Like others, I use the socks for ding protection, but have goldenrods in my safes for humidity issue prevention.

I use the rechargeable desiccant plastic boxes in my safe. The desiccant buckets in my gun room, and WD40 specialist corrosion inhibitor on my guns while being stored. I wipe them down with it and then foam tbe bores with it.

I don’t use socks, but if I did I think a plain fabric one would work. Might wipe off some of the oil putting the sock on.
