This is a field evaluation of the Sightron STAC 3-16x42mm Mil-Hash reticle scope. This scope was sent to Ryan from Sightron for the Evaluation. The baseline 30 round group with this lot of ammunition was 1.5” at 100 yards.

Reticle is a relatively standard .5 mil hash, except to 1 mil it’s .25 mil ticks.

Zeroing:

Scope was mounted as standard with NF rings. The rings were degreased and installed with 65 in-lbs on base screws, and 18 in-lbs on ring cap screws. The baseline 30 round group with this lot of ammunition was 1.6” at 100 yards.

Boresight, two rounds, adjust, next 8 on left dot. Adjust, and went to reset turret. The turret mechanism to slip the turrets is a bit different, and the set screw caused clicks to be input as it was unscrewed. Got it off, re bore sighted, then shot 5 at center dot.

Drop Evaluation RTZ and “Tracking”:

For an explanation see- Scope Field Eval Explanation and Standards

The “test” consists of three 18” drops on a mat- one left/right/top with a shot to check zero after each drop. Then the exact same thing repeated from 36”. Then three drops on all three sides for nine drops on the last part- 15 drops total. This is not “abuse”. The 18” drops are a joke really. The 36” start showing something. And when a scope make/model consistently goes through the whole thing without losing zero, and makes it through the high round count portion, failures in actual use are almost unheard of.

This one was conducted on semi packed soil.

Shot #1 was a confirmer pre drops. It lost zero on the first 18” left side drop. Same for the rest of the 18” drops.

Turret had a slight lean to it-

Went back to zero target and shot two-

It sort of was at zero after the drops were stopped. Went ahead and retorqued ring base nuts, and increased torque on ring caps to 20 in-lbs.

Shot two shots and adjusted right .2 mils-

2nd drop eval-

Shots as marked.

Went back to zero target, and adored one round, adjusted and fired a second round.

Conclusion:

Scope failed the drop eval. It does seem to work fine unless dropped. It will be mounted on another rifle and have zero retention in use tracked.
