Day two I plan to hike up the edge of a large burn. Ryan and Kelly are talking about the metric chit ton of elk they had watched up high from their shooting pad so I'm thinking I need to get higher but don't want to run up to to where they were watching. Ryan's comment was it was the most elk he'd ever seen in one place in north Idaho. There was a big bull but they couldn't get a range to shoot. I set off at dawn and start climbing. It's STEEP ! I climb slowly but the only thing I come across is a deer I hear bust out. No fresh sign but lots of old. Not near as many game trails. I get about two thirds up before turned back. Steep down is worse than steep up and I picked the wrong way and ended up scooting on my butt the last 50 foot. I'm beat and dejected.
Oh , I forgot the part where I started down the wrong side of the ridge and got into some nasty dark timber with tons of down timber. I realize my mistake but it's a beating to get back up and headed down the right ridge. Was told I made the right choice climbing up out as that ridge dumped into a hell hole that they don't even hunt it's so bad.
