I am looking to make a backpack style rifle sling. I want to be able to carry my rifle on my back with 2 straps. I am going to use cordura for the outer strap, but what is everyone using for the foam and inner materials? I was thinking neoprene since it is smooth on the inside and does have some foam padding.

My heaviest rifle weighs right at 20lbs., so won't have to support much weight or be overly padded. Something similar to the harness below. I will just be using this when I don't have my pack with me.

thanks for any suggestions

I just asked a similar question in another group, they recommended cheap yoga mats. I haven’t tried it yet though.

Yea you can pretty much find whatever thickness you want. I make pack frame straps from 1/2" xpe foam. You can get eva craft foam at stores like joanns in various thicknesses for quite cheap. They sell it for making cosplay costumes. Comes in big black sheets about the size of poster board. I have used that for lighter duty straps. A perk of going with 1/4" foam is you can just stack up your fabric and foam layers and just edge bind it. This is an example of that. Thicker foam will make you have to cram the foam into a sewn sleeve basically.
