I’ve only ever used slugs through shorter tactical shotguns like the 870 marine magnum and moss berg 500s, so I’m not a shotgun expert.

A few months ago I was gifted a lower end shotgun and it has a mod choke in it, I have no other chokes.

Is it safe to fire slugs with a mod choke???

Thanks!!!

Usuallly no bueno accuracy wise. Easy to open choke.

My Winchester sx2 shoots clover leafs at 50 yards with a modified choke and cheap Remington slugs. I’d try it you never know..

Short answer is no. 12 ga for example bore is .729-.730 and all slugs now are standardized at .730. You choke will get swaged out. Remington used to make the Slugger slug at .690 which could be fired in almost any choke but quit in early 80s

Interesting. I wonder if they started making them again or if mine are 40 years old? Got them at cabelas a year ago. I’m glad you brought that up, I would hate to screw up my barrel with other slugs.

Foster style slugs are just fine in a mod choked barrel. As another poster mentioned, some guns shoot them better with a little choke.

Brenneke slugs are also fine with any choke according to the FAQ here.

I wouldn’t shoot sabot slugs in your mod choke.

As far as lead swaging a choke, I think someone is passing bad info.

I have lived in shotgun only deer zones all my life and seen full and modified chokes used. often.
my first shotgun had a full choke and I slug hunted with it for years.

and I also bird hunted with it.

Find a slug that groups well & go nuts. Some will love it, some will hate it.
Aside from sabots, they're all safe to shoot. You'll just need to find what works best for you.
