Anyone have experience with a short barreled 7mm? I’m running a fierce carbon rage 7prc right now shooting 175 eldx’s at around 2850 out of a 24 inch barrel with a AB raptor 8. I’d like to shoot around the same weight bullet (maybe heavier) and get good speed out of a shorter gun.

I hunt with a 22” 7 prc and Rex silentium MG7 suppressor. Hornady box 175 eldx precision hunter are coming out at 2917. Averaging a .3 moa group (3 shot) at 100 yards. X caliber barrel.

I’m getting 2870fps out of my 22” BSF barrel. 7PRC, 175 gr ELDX, 66.9 gr H1000

Just screwed on a brand new 20” Bartlein 8 twist barrel for my 7 PRC today, in their Mod400BB steel.
Hornady 175 ELDX ammo = 2,830 fps
168 ABLR, 66.0 N560, F210M = 2,835 (for reference it shot 2,910 in my broken in 21” Bartlein 8 twist a month ago)
175 EH, 70.0 N565, F215M = 2,810

Assuming this barrel speeds up I think I’ll be close to, or right at, where my 21” barrel was.

It's not quite a PRC but when I was shooting 168 Bergers in my 280 ai with rl26 behind it... I was getting 2895 on a 20" barrel. In the real world that's more than plenty for me

My 7prc with the 175 eldx and 68.0 H1000 gets 2965 22" Proof barrel
I'm wanting to go 18" on a new one

I imagine you are going to get better velocity out of shorter barrels by moving to a shorter fatter cartridge. 7WSM is probably the ticket.

Finishing my 7prc build next week. Hoping to get velocities like above. Seems like this round is all over the place. 22” bergara barreled action. Going to use H1000 and Berger 180VLD. Will update after spinning up a load.

Awesome. Thank you. Figured it would be suppressed with those velocities.

It took about 75-100 rounds during load development and break-in to see those velocities. Barrel sped up about 80fps based on that load from the beginning.

To kind of give you an idea. This is from load development on mine. top left 67.5, middle 68.0 bottom right hornady factory 175eldx. 69.0 started to show pressure and backed off. 68.0 has been good to me. Most of the load development was done between 70 and 80 degrees F. I've taken this rifle out to 1370 yards and it's been stellar.

I have a 18” 7 saum w Nomad Ti XC shooting 175 Elite Hunter at 2700. Love it.
What powder and brass manufacturer are you using for this load?

I have a bit of 4831SC for a 24” saum but have been entertaining building out another with a shorter barrel.

Main whitetail gun i’ve been using over the past several years has been an 18” 7-08 which works well with the 150eld’s at 2625-2650fps. Love the idea of little heavier bullet at a little more speed in a similar short barrel.

63.0 g of N560 w Gunwerks brass. I believe ADG makes it. If I was to build it again I would probably go with a medium action and a steel barrel. Idk, I guess carbon fiber is nice bc it doesn’t rust… but I am really happy w my gun. Defiance Rengade nitrided action, Benchmark barrel throated long by TS Customs, and Hawkins Hunter DBM.

The 175 EH puts big holes in things, so aim a little further back from the front shoulder 😜

Saw a comment above short fat cases do better with short barrels. Might be some small truth to that but dont you think case volume will determine velocity achieved more than case shape?

Would guess depends on what factors you are looking at ie. looking at it from efficiency and ability to actually burn all the extra powder in the barrel and not shoot blow it out the muzzle or remain unconsumed as foulant in the barrel?

Which in that case probably depends on host of factors around powder type and bullet.

The Backfire channel on youtube had an interesting video awhile ago on the “battle of the 7’s” comparing the 284ai and 7saum comparing things this way. Not sure where the 7prc would fall into this world as video was before then and I don’t own one to have played around with it.

Just my 2 cents.
