Short-barrel-magnum-chambered rifles?

7prc if you want it to and you’re dead set. My biggest rifle used is. 18” 6.5 prc and only on certain hunts I need a little more range. 16” 6 creed is my new go to for my elevation and a sub 500 yard range. The 270 and 7mm-08 stat in the safe. Yes I’ve killed elk and deer with 300rum, 300norma improved, and 300wm.

@longrangelead

I’m kinda with you. I have a 300 Win Mag and love the way it kills but I’ve kinda fallen in love with my 6.5 GAP 4s (essentially at 6.5 PRC). Of course I will always hunt some with my 6x45s, but the 6.5 with a 156 @ 2820fps from an 18” barrel kills awesome, has the same ballistics as the heavy .30s and burns 20 grains less powder. It’s also 9” shorter, which is a huge plus.

exactly. my 6.5 is 22" and shoots 156's 2950 in virgin brass, and 2875 in 2x+ fired brass. It's silly how effective it is. I describe it to people as kicking like a stout 308, but killing like a 7 mag.

even less recoil is so much more fun though...

Im using an Omega 300 with the anchor brake and I think my 243 has similar recoil. I’d have no problem letting my wife or young hunter shoot it. Not the case for my 300 Win Mag.

7prc is a great cartridge for what you are looking for. 300wsm would be great too. If you put a silencer on it then recoil won’t matter much, as it will tame them nicely!

I was shooting a 300 win mag with a 26” barrel and a SiCo harvester evo and it was amazing to shoot with very little recoil. I ended up selling it after its first trip out west because it was a bit too long with the can on it. Now I’ve got a 20” 7 PRC, and I plan to get a 20-22” 300wsm as well. I just enjoy working with these rifles and developing loads for them.
