I feel like I missed the boat on the Fieldcrafts but did grab one of the Tikka SS 6.5 for $499, so my plan is carbon barrel/stock. I’d like to think I could get around a 7 lb. scoped with a lightweight Leupold.
what stock would you likely choose? I was thinking the light weight Maven could be a great scope for such a rifle.
That looks like an impressive upgrade package. I'm not even sure if I can get that in Canada easily.I have been looking at the OMR Tikka upgrade package with AG stock but can’t decide on caliber and barrel length. I’m leaning toward 6 or 6.5 creed in 16” for suppressed hunting out to the 3-400 yard range.
Another vote for a Kimber. I think their issues are generally sorted and I've personally not seen or shot a dud. Doesn't mean they aren't out there, but I havent seen them.
I've played with 2 Sako finnlight's, they are two of the worst recoiling rifles I've ever shot. One of them was a .243. Something about that stock shape just didnt work for neither my brother or myself. There definitely seems to be 2 camps with that stock. It either works fine for people or it sucks, not much in between.
I dont know if you'll find a Fieldcraft in Canada. I've been looking for a couple weeks and haven't found one. It doesnt sound like there is any left in the supply chain, and Barrett apparently isnt making more. A couple shops thought they might have some awaiting customs clearance, but no one ever seems to know. If you find one, jump on it
... or let me know
I've also personally moved away from 24" barrels on my light guns, and even 22" is starting to feel unnecessarily long. I find the shorter barrels enhance the lightweight nature of the guns and a long barrel quickly takes it away.
I have been looking at Kimberley mountain ascent. Does anyone have experience shooting one that can provide feedback on how much kick there is? Typically a problem with lighter rifles.
there is the tikka superlite, since you are already a tikka fan. for ultralight it's hard to count out current kimbers, if it was 8-10yrs ago I could see the concern, but they seem solid these days.... even the hunters are very consistent. i had one for awhile and it hung with my tikka in accuracy.
i'm getting a savage ultralite, they just seem like you can't go wrong, and certainly can't build a similar rig for the price... they are a little ugly, but dead critters will not mind they were killed with an ugly rifle
