Would you do it?

I have the same issue at a property I hunt. If there are any known structures or people down range, within a reasonable distance, regardless of any elevation change or obstruction, I'm not shooting.

My buddy wanted to shoot a buck this last season, but there was homes and horses in the background.

A deer is not worth it.

I'm shooting.. if me and the animal I'm pursuing are on legally accessible land, with a clear and safe direction of fire I'm sending it.
If u don't like it, sell your house and move.
Your feelings don't trump my rights.

ah a Californian well I wouldn’t be too concerned there are enough Californians who live and hunt here now we don’t even have to leave our state to experience west coast culture

That explains all the Subarus and Lexus we saw this year

Posts up a field surrounded by houses but its the middle of nowhere:ROFLMAO:

Please stay in the east
Huh? This is literally 12 miles from a town in NW CO where I live and the nearby town is small. Small rural group of houses surrounded by public land and ranches. No need to be rude about it. For the majority of Americans, this is middle of nowhere. Definitely not the north Nevada desert though.

Thats not that far out. You posted a pic of a field with houses on 3 sides of it. Very clear that it isnt in the middle of nowhere. Just because it is legal doesnt mean you should...

Personally no. It comes down to your personal ethics, you choose to not shoot it due to the homes, so that's your personal ethics.

Just having to ask the question shows we don’t have enough safety education, warnings on every part of every rifle, laser etched warnings on every piece of brass, lawsuits, and public service announcements. Cheese and rice.

Wtf

Do you know how stupid it sounds to say you’re actually thinking about firing a high power rifle directly in the direction of people?

I don't know about BLM land but the NFS policy is shooting must be at least 150 yd from any structure. My opinion is that if it is safe and legal, nearby residential comfort is secondary to feeding my family. The residents should consider the trade-offs of living adjacent to huntable land. Safe and legal.

What if you use a muzzleloader or a shotgun with slugs? If you are elevated, not shooting directly at a house and the range of the gun is limited I would think that was safe. What is the drop on a 12ga 3in mag slug a 400 yards? Has to be a couple feet. No way that's going to ricochet and go 300 more yards.

Pheasants with a shotgun, go for it. Deer with a bow, go for it. Anything with a rifle, pass.

I appreciate the “opinions”, but trying to sell, “feed my family” is a hard pass.

I don’t know this area, but I believe to OP has confirmed there is plenty of public land around so this isn’t a limited options solution, not that that should matter.

I appreciate you seeking feedback and I think the group agrees, though it’s not unanimous.

PS. I can hear the stupid responses already, but imagine that buck goes and dies in someone’s yard. Not ideal either.

Right!?!? My son and I looked at each other and said, "we gotta get a Subaru!". Then we'll be successful." Although there was a nice Lexus LS 600 (or similar model - I don't know my Lexus models...) that would have made a sweet hunting/overland rig.

Those Lexus’ are the “ im better than you, but still outdoorsy rig” haha 😆 not hating I want one

The weird thing is you can buy a gently used Lexus GX, LS with a great offroad system and outstanding durability and luxury for less than a Honda, Toyota, Ford, Chevy, etc.

Lexus is truly the best kept secret in either SUV or cars. They are generally perfectly maintained and in perfect shape at 3 years old.

If you lived in one of those houses how would you feel about someone popping off a rifle in your direction. You made the right choice.
