I have used kitty litter, and it works fine. Some people have said it will set like concrete if you get it too wet. That only applies to the type of litter that clumps.
Also filled an old sock with rice and used it as a rear bag for several years. I haven't got either of these wet. If it's raining, or wet, I can always shoot off some other rest.
Walnut media isn't a bad idea. Save yourself some money and get "reptile bedding" walnut media instead of "tumbling media" though.
